“Gem tucked away”
Reviewed December 18, 2012

Right in the middle of the filth and noise of the old town's tiniest winding streets, Bristows Haveli is a blissful oasis of quiet. We arrived very late and tired, which was unfortunate as concrete beds, painfully thin mattresses, very low, head-banging doorways and ultra spartan bathrooms are best first encountered when you're feeling strong!
We had the downstairs 'suite' which was a shame because the bamboo screens which are used as doors dont give you real privacy or exclude the little noises of the household (not that it's a noisy place).
But we loved it. The place is the beloved project of its English owner, Phil, and it's a fascinating, quirky and honest renovation that oozes character and peace. The garden and the rooftops are brilliant places to relax. The food is excellent and the laundry is surely the best and the cheapest in all India - thank you Puja! The service was great - thank you Ramu! Lastly, the place is spotless.

As others have said Bristows Haveli provides something for the more discerning traveller. On our fourth trip to India we were enchanted by the experience. Phil, a noted orientallist,is a charming host and Ramu and his wife great cooks. We ate in every night. The decor and gardens provide a calming ambience and the locality in the heart of the old city is ideal.
The rooms by nature of the architecture are not huge but the whole building is wonderful to stay in. This is quite a unique travelling experience.

Where to start and how to do justice to such an experience staying at Bristow's. We stayed with our two friends for a week in the middle of travelling in the North and South India and it proved to be the highlight of the North. To have Phil to advise and suggest trips really personalised our stay.

The attention to detail, which Phil excelled in, i.e. tealights lighting the path leading to the outdoor eating area in the evening where delicious home-cooked meals were served, prepared and cooked by Ramu and his wife (if ordered in the morning) made it so memorable. This authentic heveli, lovingly looked after and run by this hard-working threesome with its squeeky clean bedrooms and bathrooms is thoroughly recommended in every respect. When people get it right it seems only fair to share it. We will be back!

Room Tip: The two first floor suites are both equally attractive but one has a balcony with a view of the fort...

When we got down from our cab at Manek Chowk, we found out that we had a walk a few meters along narrow dirty roads with open drains to reach Bristow's Haveli. Once inside we were instantly transported to an oasis. A calm, dust free and relatively quiet place with a large open garden which should be rarity within the walls of the old city. We had the room with a large balcony overlooking the Mehrangarh Fort. It is just a few minutes walk to the clock tower and takes a 15 minute walk to climb up the fort through the back alleys. The bustling market place is interesting to walk around. Phil's suggestions about the sights and the shopping tips helped us to maximize our short stay at Jodphur. Parents traveling with small children need to mind that the Haveli is a small space shared among guests and that there are restored antiques around the property and in the rooms. The doorways inside the Haveli are a little over five feet tall and there was no air-conditioning in our room. The included continental breakfast would have been better if eggs had been included. Bristow's Haveli transported us to a bygone era but still provided us with spotless modern bathrooms and serenity.

Bristows is a haven in the heart of the old city. It is a true "bed-and-breakfast" in the same sense you'd expect in the English or French countryside.

The owner (Phil) and manager (Ramu) act more like caretakers of the house. They are intimate and give great attention to detail and personalized service, while at the same time being discreet and giving the privacy you require. Ramu's boy - Primo - is also a bundle of joy to be around.

You feel like you are truly living in someone's home. There are only four suites. Everyone sits around the breakfast table together in the garden for breakfast. The house even has a no shoes policy which makes it all the more cozy (and not a bad thing in light of the dirty streets!).

Truly recommended for the discerning traveller.

I stayed for 3 nights recently in this beautiful and peaceful retreat. It was wonderful to sit on my little terrace in the morning and see the old fort towering above in the early light. The garden is a lush green oasis and full of birds. It is also an ideal place to explore from and retreat back to when it all gets a bit overwhelming. It is full of beautiful things and very tasteful and colourful.
It was imaculately clean. The breakfast was just what one wants - with proper coffee, toast, fresh fruit, butter in chunks, proper jam, bone china cups- a little bit of england that somehow help one to feel safe. The evening meal - which they will cook as an optional extra- was some of the best food I have had in India. Fantastic cooking.
Phil was very helpful with advice and recommendations.
All in all thoroughly recommended

My husband and I have stayed at Bristows Haveli on 3 other trips to India and have just booked our 4th. We have taken various rooms and suites and each offers it's own unique charm and ambience. As mentioned in other reviews, Phil is the perfect host, on hand to settle you in and answer the inevitable 101 questions and also happy to leave you to explore and savour the tranquility of the haveli, be it the beautiful garden - like stumbling upon a secret or the roof-top pavilion where you can gaze over the roof-tops as the sun sets or if you're lucky , watch the full moon rise.
The food, prepared by Ramu is always fresh and delicious. There are relaxed dining and seating areas and books and maps to peruse over. The Mehrangarh Fort remains a constant backdrop and is a facinating place to visit. Be prepared for some serious chilling out.
