“Facinating and enjoyable place to stay”
Reviewed January 30, 2009

Jaisalmer was the 4th city we visited on our 6 cities tour of Rajasthan. This was a low budget adventured / cultural tour for my husband and I and we arrived in Jaisalmer late at night rather exhausted from the road trip...Fortunately, we were very well received at the Mandir Palace.

Our room was ready and we were invited to have diner at their roof top restaurant despite the late hour (9pm). The food was good, well served. With the beautifully lited Jaisalmer fort at the background, we were most delighted with the evening. It finally made sense to have travel such a long way to be in Jaisalmer!

Our room was simple but confortable and clean. The Palace is renovated in a natural way, we wonder around its various levels and enjoy the simplicity and its classical charecter. We enjoyed our stay here.

I spent two days in the Hotel with my Girlfriend - it was really magic and the Girlfriend loved it too. Very good beds (I can't understand the other comments to the contrary in this posting) and friendly, helpful staff, but the best is the unbeatable atmosphere of this beautiful palace. This was definetely one of the most memorable hotels during our three week trip through Rajastahn.

Stayed here for three days. Good clean ambience with the delight of staying in erstwhile royal compartments. The aura of the carved yellow stoned walls is inviting. The location of the property is ideal. Roof-top dinner is an added excitement.

We stayed at Mandir Palace in Dec 2007. Out of he many hotels we stayed in our driving trip aound Rajasthan this was unstayable. Its a good architectural palace to see - with its stone work. In fact one chose this place only because this place is a franchisee of Welcomgroup - they usually have good hoels in their chain but this one does them more damage than good

Stayed in Mandir Palace for three nights over New Year 2008.

The hotel is located in the town of Jaisalmer, on Gandhi Chowk. It's a very large, old property, with beautifully carved old buildings blended with modern structures, all made out of golden sandstone (see photos). It's a great location, handy to shops, markets and restaurants. It's a fascinating 10 to 15 minute walk to the fort gate.

The bedroom we stayed in was large, with a large bathroom and smaller dressing room. The bathroom was a large marble-tiled room, but water splashed everywhere from the shower. The beds were firm, not hugely comfortable, and the sheets and blankets just average. The room had air-conditioning, but no heating. It can get quite cool at night.

The roof deck is expansive, if relatively unfurnished, and offers great views of the fort at dawn and dusk (see photo). It was lovely to sit up there and read, have a drink, and just watch the colour of the fort change at the end of the day.

What I loved about the hotel was the ornately carved old buildings that made up the complex. There are also two small Hindu temples on site. It really has a lot of character.

There were a couple of things that weren't great:

1. the manager quoted Rs 3200 for a car to take us to Jodhpur. The local travel agents right outside the hotel charge Rs 1800.

2. the hotel organised a big New Years' party that was in many ways ill-judged, resulting in many guests arguing with the manager and retiring before midnight

I only at the restaurant twice, for breakfast, which was just OK. That's not a big deal, as there are reasonable restaurants within 5 minutes' walk of the hotel.

That all said, I'm rating it 'Above average' because the buildings are so beautiful to look at.

Located just inside the town Jaisalmer with great views from the roof to the fort (great at night). Beds are just average, breakfast was nothing to write home about (buffet???); with fewer guests, you have to order a la carte. It is also not a dinner restaurant, as most guest just go into town where you have places to eat and you can still take an interesting stroll to the old town which leads you up to the entrance of the fort. All in all, though, a good place to stay and it is clean!

Pros:
Absolutely Fantastic location, near good shopping & restaurants, and the view of the fort at night is stunning. Converted Palace with real stone walls in room. Staff promptly addressed problem with hot water heater. Great roof top spot for tea. Front desk very organized and prepared for our arrival.

Cons:
Restaurant fairly priced but food is marginal. Save your money for Saffron next door in the Chowk. Rooms a bit worn, but average for US$50-100/night club in India.
