Finding a nice place to stay while on vacation based on online information can be a bit difficult sometimes, especially when looking for places in India where information can be sparse sometimes. We took our chances with Mandir Palace and were not disappointed at all!

Mr Virendra, the manager was very helpful in setting up our booking over the phone and a great host while we were there. The property was built as a palace outside the fort and is still the royal residence. The royal family stay in a private part of the hotel. Virendra explained this to us along with a brief tour of the place. The rooftop dinner offers some magnificent views of the fort.

The next day Virendra set us up with a map of the city, places to visit, rough estimate of prices for guides and auto-rickshaws etc. Invaluable information where it is not uncommon for tourists to get ripped off! The palace is walking distance from all the attractions in Jaisalmer. He set us up with a desert safari at a very reasonable price and even had some takeaway sandwiches prepared for the drive. It was the personal touches that made this stay a memorable one.

I would recommend Mandir palace to anyone as an affordable and authentic place to stay while in Jaisalmer.

Room Tip: We had the Golden Suite with was worth the extra money. Think they gave us a special.

The hotel occupies a beautiful haveli and our room was in the old part of the building. Very large room, large shower and working A/C. The bed was comfortable and clean. The hotel manager, with his crazy moustache is an unmissable character. We haven't tried the swimming pool due to the green tinge which didn't inspire confidence. Breakfast, although not very good by Western standards was nonetheless a notch above anything we have tried for breakfast in India.
Plus it is located in the old city, within walking distance of all attractions.

When you enter the hotel premises you feel you are in a different world. It’s hard to describe the contrast you see between the two worlds. The hotel is awesome; the detailed work of the architecture is very beautiful.

Rooms are comfortable but no character; I stayed in one of the more modern room. The hotel provides ayurvedic bio soaps and body lotions that I really enjoyed. I loved them so much that I bought these ayurvedic products later on.

Food was fine. Breakfast was mix of Western and Indian dishes but with somewhat limited selection. I though was happy. I had dinner there once on the top floor restaurant. When I didn’t find anything on the menu I liked, they asked me what I would like and will make it; and they did. There was also someone sick in the group; the restaurant prepared special dish for him; it was very nice of them.

This was a charming place to stay with plenty of character. The rooms were very clean and well decorated. The staff were very helpful and I had laundry done here that was back same day.
The restaurant food and drink prices were reasonable. Breakfast was good quality.

The pool was lovely and in a nice private area.
The hotel is owned by a Mahajarah whose family still lives in residence in another part of the building. It is within walking distance to the fort and other attractions in the city.
I would definitely recommend this hotel.

I was a little sceptical before booking the place b'cos of some of the negative comments about the place but i was wonderfully surprised by the hospitality meted out there....the reception was quite warm & the person who greeted us at the reception desk(i found out later that he was one from the royal family who lives in a part of the palace & maintains the place)very nicely explained to us about the things we were to experience in the coming two days....
The stone-walled suite we chose was once the private chamber of the maharaj at one point of time....it was quite cozy, the amenities sufficient, the tv had a lot of channels(most we found in rajasthan, out of the 6 hotels we stayed in there)....But the one thing you can grumble about is the availability of hot water early in the morning( the hot water is solar heated) but we are late risers anyway so it didnt bother us that much....
The food is quite good if you stay within limits and do not go for very fanciful stuff....The breakfast was sufficient and the camel safari we went for was quite enjoyable....The staff was quite friendly & i guess being a bengali helped as all of them serving at the hotel turned out to know my mother tongue....
The heritage tag quite suits the hotel....The beautiful ornate carvings were mesmerizing and they have been maintained quite well....This place actually gives you a feeling of living in a palace....For those who know the famous Satyajit Ray and have heard of his movie in the 50s-'Goopy gain Bagha bain" will be glad to know that portions of the movie were shot in the very hotel itself.....It was a tremendous feeling to recognize the places within the hotel where the movie we grew up seeing was shot.....It was a blissful experience....

Room Tip: Stay in one of the two Golden Suites....

The USP of this place is the history attached to it. The Maharawal of Jaisalmer wanted to encourage his people to settle outside the golden fort as well. Since nobody was taking the first step he shifted out and built himself a palace to reside in. It was called the Mandir Palace. Its an extremely beautiful Palace hotel with exquisite carvings that adds to the whole experience of staying in this hotel. Of course its Surya Mahal suite is worth checking out, its grand and beautiful with an ornate balcony. But perhaps the clincher is the fact that it was the Maharawal's room earlier. The service is prompt and Mr. Rathore, the man in charge here personally overlooks everything. The Buffet though had weird combination of food on offer but one can overlook it if not too finicky by nature. Explore the palace and its museum it will surely take you back in time.....

We stayed in Surya Mahal Suite @ Mandir Place in Jan 2012. This was actually the king's room earlier. The room is huge and gives a royal feeling.
The terrace view of the fort and hotel is great. All the good restaurants are just outside the hotel, The Trio and Saffron, are the few to name.
This is a heritage property and a overall was a great royal experience.
The movie Sarfarosh was shot here.
