“Superb Value for Money”
Reviewed November 7, 2008

I and my wife thought of taking a break before what promised to be a rather busy fesitive and business season. My Travel agent suggested I try out Mahadev Palace in Jaisalmer, though i should admit i was rather skeptical about the suggestion. Initial research about the property also did not yield very favorable impression and i actually called up the hotel to have a feel of what kind of staff was I going to be served by. I told Madhav, the front office manager, about my apprehension and he assured me that he will personally ensure that my stay was good. took a package of 2 nights and 3 days (keeping my fingers crossed all the time).
Reached the Hotel on the 10th October and were pleasently surprised by the beautiful foyer and the very well kept pool. our room was on the first floor and overlooked the pool.
The service was very good as well. Food was reasonably priced and was served hot. I was disappointed by the Breakfast though. We ordered a continental fare and it turned out to be too oily. In fact, i think it would be better if they remove continental dishes from their menu. Another downside was that the resturant was pure veg. I had thought of having some local mutton specialites and we had to venture in the market to search for them. The beer was as cool as it should be. Went to Trio restaurant for lunch after having read a lot of rave reviews about it. It turned out to be a HUGE disappointment. Too expensive and not worth even half of it.
If you are looking for some good deals in Desert Safari, i would not suggest the Hotel's services. They offered us a deal for Rs, 2800/- plus taxes for the Sam Desert safari (excluding the night stay and taxi). We ventured out and got a deal for Rs. 2000/-, including taxi. However, a word of caution. If one goes in for a taxi, one can have a choice of going in for an A/c vehicle. We took a jeep ride instead.
Another problem was the relative distance of the Hotel from the Main city. Thankfully the Auto stand was just 5 minutes walk from the main gate.
Overall, however, it was a very pleasent expeience staying at the Hotel and I would love to stay with them wheniver i go to Jaisalmer.
PROS: Courteous Staff, good housekeeping, Large rooms, prompt service, wonderfully chilled beer, Value for money.
CONS: Vegetarian, Good indian but very oily continental food, Distance from main city.

  • Liked — Courteous staff, prompt service, housekeeping, Pool
  • Disliked — Oily continental food, distance from the town.

Could you stay in this hotel? Answer is No. It looks grand and elegant from the outside - but the living experience is not good.
First day we arrived, it took the receptionist ages to find our name, we had asked for a triple room. We were given a double room with a small uncomfortable folding bed as the the third bed, which of course is not suitable for an adult staying for 2 nights.

We had asked for guest towels but we had to wait 1.5 hours until they provided the towels. There was no hot water. The room service was very slow and the manner of the receptionist was very unhelpful and ignorant despite several attempts to ask for the towels. As a paying guest in the hotel, I was very disappointed in the service and quality of the rooms. I will not recommend this hotel to anyone - you would be mad to stay here.

A note to the owner of Mahadev Palace - you have successfully hired the most inept bunch of missfits this side of Dubai - congratulations as these sorry sack of souls perfectly suit your deplorable establishment.

No hot water...correction - no water.

Aweful service - correction - no service

Aweful location...no correction.

Rant over as we're off to find a shower somewhere else.

The hotel is situated outside the fort, with a rickshaw about 10 minutes. If you like the quiet environment the location of the hotel is not bad. However, the rooms are very old fashioned. Nothing special in order to give you the real Rajasthani feeling. The aircondition systems work only up to 3 a.m. in the morning (and that only if the machine works). Afterwards they prefer to save on energy,
hence, the air co does not work and you wake up sweating. The staff is very unfriendly and the restaurant is disgusting. It's in the basement of the hotel without any windows and it smells bad. There is
really nothing special about this hotel. It has a swimming pool but it's not as good as it looks on pictures. You would hardly make use of it. Overall suggestion: Stay at the fort (despite of lonely planet's suggestions to not stay at the fort). Because what the lonely planet writes about the fort being affected by tourism is simply not true. There are very cute hotels giving you the right feeling about Jaiselmer.

Our travel agent selected this hotel for us. It's not a palace, but the rooms are very clean and the staff was responsive to our requests for extra sheets (they provide bottom sheets, but no top sheets unless you ask). The hotel is a very long walk from the tourist sites, so you'll need to negotiate a 40r rate with your tuk-tuk driver. This hotel has a restaurant that offers a buffet at breakfast - it's okay. For other meals, eat at Trio or Little Italy. Trio has live music and is across the street from a wedding palace, so you might get to see some wedding processings from your dinner table.

the shower didn't work, tv didn't work, cockroach in the bathroom, no water in the pool...when we went downstairs for some breakfast we realized the buffet didn't exist. We asked for a menu and a guy just said "no"......i gave him an awkward stare and then left....im surprised this place is still in business
