“Is it really Taj???”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 26, 2011

The hotel though owned by Taj Hotels does not really give that feel. Seems like that the hotel has been built and operated keeping only foreign tourists in mind. The only saving grace is the courteous staff which is Taj's specialty. Food was bad and expensive, rooms smelly and service poor. I paid a bomb for food buffett which had no spices at all apparently to appease the foreign group in the hotel. It's located away from the main city so is devoid of any hustle and bustle.

This hotel certainly has its charms. Warm colored stones, low buildings and small courtyards with lots of plants, all geometrical and no frills, make it look like a European holiday village which can be a nice change after too many imitation palaces. There's a nice swimming pool, unfortunately without shade.
The rooms are equally without frills and amenities are more adequate than impressive. The food is rather mediocre as is the service, although staff was friendly enough.
A bit annoying: the hotel lies basically in the desert and during our stay, several sandstorm covered the place in a fine layer of sand. Have to say the staff was really fast in cleaning everything.
While writing this, I notice that my writing totally lacks enthusiasm. I guess this reflects how I feel about this hotel: it was ok, but unlike many other hotels in its category, it never captured me.

We returned to our room from the desert with parched throats and when we asked for water, we were told to pay for it (and an obscene amount that too) because the hotel has a "Taj policy" of two bottles of water for a room every day. Indian hospitality, indeed. This is a budget hotel, but the people who run it have delusions of grandeur. I asked for change for Rs 500, they said no. I persisted, and as if by magic, the change appeared. Don't even think of booking a taxi from the hotel front desk, the fare they charge is unnecessarily high. The rooms are indifferently decorated and the "free" buffet breakfast assumes that you are on a crash diet. Expect to see a cleaning cart and uncleared food trays a part of the decor of the passage leading to you room. Give the hotel a big miss.

We had booked a tent expecting a Taj experience, we have stayed in tented camps before and enjoyed it. This was A big shock to find tents right by the roadside, cramped together and filled with second hand furniture you'd find from an elderly relative. The staff were very polite and friendly, the manager tried to convince us to try the rooms instead, at that point we had made our minds up and booked online suryagarh where we had a wonderful suite for the same price and free Internet (not 600 rupees for 24 hours as with Gateway) Not sure why it got such good reviews below. This is not a Taj property as you would expect.

We stayed in tents rather than rooms at The Gateway and found it very comfortable and enjoyable. All amenities were available and the staff were very welcoming and courteous. The stay was a very good desert stay experience but a bit too expensive I felt.

Best:
1. Rooms - very spacious, with an old indian haveli feel. Not overly fresco designed or complicated artistry. But at the same time, charming and with character.
2. Spread - the hotel is spread in a beautiful manner with open galleries with bougainvillea plants, there are cosy nook and corners with elegant seating, perfect for those on not too expensive honeymoon.
3. View - Top notch view of the Fort - Since this is the only reason why tourists go to jaisalmer, you get excellent views from many rooms and pool and dining areas.
4. Service - Quick service and they have all the things in the menu (surprising!!!)
5. Entertainment - there are traditional folk dances and singers every other night, and they do not repeat what they performed earlier.. nice

Average
1. the location is not too great, although the view is good, living within the fort is the best.
2. food
3. Staff - although they try to help a lot, they lack intuition and forward mindedness

Bad -
1. The tents in the hotel are pretty close to each other. you sometimes hear other guests talking. maybe they are the ones who pass through but you never know.

Recommend: visitors who want to relax for 2-3 days in jaisalmer and not overly anxious about the fort and the dunes, basically absorbing the feel.
