We stayed here for 3 nights during the end of 2012.

The Good:

Beautiful 200 year old palace converted into a hotel. Every corner throws up something new. Lovely terrace with view of the fort. Its an excellent base to explore the old havelis and even the fort is a short walk away. Rajasthani folk singers were pretty good.

The Bad:

We had booked a desert safari through the hotel which turned out to be pretty pretty bad. (Left halfway through). Food is ok at best. Expected better breakfast at a property of this level.

Truly waste of an excellent property..everything is poor. Bad rooms, even an upgraded one was not upto mark. No water available in rooms due to bad water conditions in Jaisalmer, we need to buy at Rs 100/- per litre. Oldest and good looking heritage property totally wasted. Very poorly upkept, despite owners who I am told are very particular.

Thinking that this was the best hotel on town, we did our prior bookings and on reaching there we were really impressed to see the property. Slowly the service started to show it's true colors. The waiters are rude. The manager Mr. Mannu Shawney, know only one thing to every problem is to give a sheep smile!! We discovered that our phones are not working, which we kind of were ok with. But when we got a call at midnight to move our car, we realized that these guys have fewer phone connections and all they do is keep switching the jumpers!

Somehow we were not in a mood to have our dinner at this property because the way the buffet was laid out. We went to this near by rocking place called Nachna Haveli, which is far too alive and the place to stay in, almost the same tariff! Thr was live Rajasthani folk dance too.

On the contrary Narayan Niwas was a dead place!

The property is spectacular and an easy base to explore the old city and even a quick walk to the fort. The rooms are spacious and very clean. I don't know why there are TVs in the rooms because they don't get any channels, but there are incredible views of the fort and kite flying children from the roof. The service is so-so (re: exceptional for India). There is no volunteering any information. You must ask for everything and the food is nothing to get excited about.

Room Tip: Rooms with a view of hte fort are brighter, but noisier.

We stayed at this hotel as there was a mix up with our first choice hotel and so this one was a last minute agoda booking one week before we were supposed to arrive in Jaiselmere, the service was awful, hardly any one speaks adequate english ,the night before we arrived we rang from Jodhpur to ask to be collected, after having the phone put down on us twice ,i gave the phone to the our indian friend who firstly was told we had no booking with him and after being told we were holding the hotel voucher in our hands was told he can not pick us up and that we should get there ourselves!upon arriving and checking in no one showed us our room ,we were just give the keys,we decided to have 2 iced coffees before going up ,we were brought 2 cold coffees in cups which we sent back ,the room was not cleaned everyday ,you have to request for your room to be cleaned,at breakfast which is buffet style ,you have to wait for things to come in at different time ,eg:no plates but cutlery,no tea or coffee but milk, juice but no glasses etc. The so called pool is indoors, dark and dirty, the upstairs restaurant on the roof abandoned and not used.Generally OVER priced beyond belief,if you can help it do not stay here!

We stayed at Narayan Niwas Palace from 17th & 18th November, 2012. 4 Rooms.

PROS:
Excellent property. loads Heritage feel and old world charm (except rooms)

The oldest property of Jaisalmer (there are many better properties available at better prices)

Mr. Showrey, a friend of the owner, was present for management, who was quite cooperative, and made our stay comfortable.

CONS:

They take the full payment in advance, so you are stuck there at their mercy.

Third grade service. Totally biased attitude. Only running after foreign nationals till the verge of irritating them, and insulting Indian customers...Even the waiters can slap a couple of comments on your face, and the management is totally ignorant about it.

In one of our rooms, the A/C wasn't working, but they insisted that it is in order and will cool in some time. After waiting for 4 hours, we insisted that the adjacent room was unoccupied and requested Mr. Showry to shift us, which he promptly did. It is to be noted that the front office guy kept insisting that it was already booked for someone else. We later found out that he was saving that room for some possible foreign national, if one drops in. He hesitantly gave us that room after we actually barged into that one.

The intercom wasn't working in any of the rooms. we had to walk down to the front desk for every little requirement.

Cramped rooms, flimsy sheets, dirty toilet (not cleaned despite of numerous complaints) I had around 50 mosquitoes in my room. Killed almost all by hand. The mosquito repellent was provided after around 20-25 reminders and good 5 hours.

Don't Drink a sip of their water. Buy bottles from outside in bulk.

Below average food. Taste, quality and quantity all not upto the mark. They would regularly run out of some or the other item, all while the meal was on. Breakfast was the same for 2 consecutive days. I doubt if they actually served the previous days breakfast again... During breakfast, having the cups and the tea together at the same time, would be a luxury. They don't even have a dispenser for tea, coffee of milk. Men run between the restaurant and kitchen carrying empty jugs of tea (capacity of the jug: about 5-6 cups) And if you ask for anything, be prepared to hear statements like,"You Indian people want everything immediately" from a waiter.

Upon inquiring, I found that they had only 6 permanent employees, and around 30 unsatisfied trainees, who came from different parts of India. Hardly anyone, except one Mr. Bisht was willing to work. This seems to be the root cause of poor service.

The swimming pool was full of dirt. when complained, 1 more interesting story was made up by the desk guy, and of course, no solution at all.

All in all, don't go to NNP. There are many more decently priced better properties available.

Offers less than average food. Promised amenities were mostly in non-working conditions.

When you go for holidays and spend Rs.5000-7000/- a day, you don't expect to be dragged into coordinating such issues with Resident Manager every few hours.

If I exclude service and amenities, other things were good - Location, cleanliness in most area and Resident Manager's intention to provide reasonable service. But I'd agree with what renowned author Robin Sharma said, "The smallest of actions is always better than the noblest of intentions".

Resident Manager took action and changed our rooms but it came so late which was very similar to non-action.

When you want to visit a popular place like Jaisalmer and have no other options available then you get rooms in Narayan Niwas Palce. Make your own judgment if you want to opt for this. It was not the WORST experience I’ve ever had.

If they eliminate the gap between their intentions and actions then it can provide satisfaction to the guests. It’s high time for them to make a wise choice.

Room Tip: Ensure that door-locks, TV and AC are in working condition. If you have any elderly person with you...
