“Thank You Desert Moon”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 14, 2013

I highly recommend Desert Moon to families looking for great value, clean rooms and a little distance (10 min walk) from the hubbub of the Jaisalmer Fort. They organized everything for us including a camel safari. We're extremely appreciative to the friendly and helpful staff. They even mailed my sons jacket (which he forgot) back to us in Delhi for free.

Thanks so much for a wonderful time!

Jaisalmer was my favorite city in Rajasthan, and I think this guesthouse had a lot to do with it. It had a peaceful atmosphere that is hard to come by in India.

I had a lovely single room with a view of the cenotaphs. There is also a terrace facing the cenotaphs with many chairs and floor cushions where you can read or nap or watch the sunset.

The hotel is a little outside of the center of town, but this was a plus in my book as it was so quiet and peaceful. You can walk into town (15 minutes down a fairly hot and dusty road) or take a tuk-tuk which the hotel will order for you (about 40RS to Gandhi Chowk and 60-80 to destinations further out).

When coming back from town I always walked to Gandhi Chowk and caught a tuk-tuk there for 40RS.

Lois and Chanesar are very friendly and welcoming. As a single woman traveler, I felt Lois really took me under her wing. She was a fount of useful information about Jaisalmer and about traveling in India in general.

They have free wifi, although you may need to ask them to switch it on. They also offer free pickup (and dropoff when possible) at the railway or bus station. Be aware that if you are a single traveler, you may get picked up on a motorbike. If you are not comfortable with this, I would recommend requesting the car instead.

The restaurant serves reliable but basic cuisine. I would recommend eating breakfast there but then maybe having lunch or dinner in town instead.

I also did a one-day camel safari here which was very low pressure. The guesthouse has their own secluded spot in the dunes where you sleep under the stars. The guide, Kareem, takes very good care of you.

I also did a very worthwhile half-day tour with Kareem of some of the outlying sights that are hard to get to with public transport: the royal cenotaphs at Bara Bagh and the Jain temples at Amarsagar and Lodurva.

This is a decent place to stay in Jaisalmer overlooking the cenotaphs. The rooms and whole place is clean and tidy. You can get a simple breakfasts and food. They arrange for free pick-ups and drop to railway and bus stations. The desert trips (camel ride) are also arranged for you.
The place is little out of town say around 10 minutes walk from the fort. The roads leading to the guest house is quite lonely at nights and with no streets lights. It is better to avoid walks in the night.
My special thanks to Mr.Karim the caretaker here for his wonderful service.

Room Tip: Take room on first floor near the balcony.

We were a travelling group of 4 girls and Lois from Desert Moon Guesthouse helped us to make our first trip to Thar the most memorable.
This was 2 years ago when we were visiting Jaisalmer only for a night!
We had picked the overnight Desert Safari and were given accomodation to freshen up before and after we left the place :)
Very helpful in offering us a free pick up and drop to the Railway station as well.
Will definitely stay again the next time I visit Jaisalmer :)

I just stayed for a night in the guesthouse. Free-pickup from the trainstation and a warm welcome from the owner and his nephew. Online reservation without problems possible. Clean room, comfortable beds. A 20 minute walk from the town center.
The only downside is that the reastaurant is without a cook at the moment and therefore has just a limited selection of food.

The property is very nice. The location is not great. It is a 15 minute walk from the town, up a semi-deserted lane. The reviews below speak good words so I think my experience must just be a blip, due, I hope, to the off-season nature of my visit. The roof-top restaurant was closed. The room was fairy dirty, including the bed-spread. There were several armies of ants and other bugs all over the room.

The aircon unit was broken so I had to used folded-up train tickets to prop the vents open to ensure the room was cool.

I hope this was a one off bad experience and wouldn't want to submit an unfair review. But if you are visiting during the off-season it may be better to stay close to, or in the centre, where standards are kept up year-round.

I spent a month in India, and this was one of my favourite stays.
The guest house is very clean and comfortable.
It is not in the old town, but only a 15 minute walk away. It is very quiet at night, the roof top restaurant has a beautiful view of the fort. The food is also quite good.
The couple running the guest house are very helpful.
Excellent choice if you visit Jaisalmer, which by itself is great.

Room Tip: For 100 rupees a double room is well worth the extra charge.
