“Good for Animal Viewing and Half Day Picnic”
Reviewed July 30, 2013

Good collection of animals. Take a guide if you want information about the area and animals. You can take an official guide from the Ticket Counter itself. If your travel companions are old or infants, then you might opt for battery operated vehicle for a price (but the waiting time is long...if you are late). You can take different safari.... but I didn't find it worth taking..(everyone's choices are different)..
Overall a good ZOO.

Nandankanan Zoological Park is a 400-hectare (990-acre) zoo and botanical garden in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India. Established in 1960, it was opened to the public in 1979 and became the first zoo in India to join World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) in 2009. It also contains a botanical garden and part of it has been declared a sanctuary. Nandankanan, literally meaning The Garden of Heavens,[1] is located near the capital city, Bhubaneswar, in the environs of the Chandaka forest, and includes the 134-acre (54 ha) Kanjia lake.

“The best zoo in India”
Reviewed July 20, 2013

This place was good earlier and used to be a normal Indian standard zoo. They suffered a major debacle where floods wiped out a major population of protected species. Now its a marvel recreated. The entry is well managed. There is a baby elephant interaction zone right inside Gate 2 (they only come out to socialise at 11 AM and 4 PM, so time yourself well). There are battery operated buggies for groups of 10, and you should try to take this in summer as its a long trek otherwise. The caged areas for the big cats are huge and you get perfect views of tigers and lions in their majesty. For photography, the move a bit to the side of the nets, and you can get unrestricted views (though you would need a very high zoom (30-40X).

There is also a bus safari through open areas, but it does not operate all the time.
