A great place to go and spend time alone by your self or with your family and friends if you can manage only a couple of days from your busy schedule. The place is about a 30 to 40 minutes drive from Shillong city via the road to the 101 army cantonment and the airforce station. Take the right sided road from the Elephant falls junction towards Mawsynram. You will be picked up by the ver enthusiastic James Perry and his team once you reach the site where he transports you to the campsite in his old but reliable four wheel drive across the stream and in to the camp site. Best to reach on a Friday afternoon so that you can settle down either in a tent or in the rustic cabins with all modern amenities such as a western toilet. You can then relax with a sumptous dinner by the fireside under the great sky and the stars and moon and then retire for the night. Mornings are misty and mysterious esp if you can get up early. One can hear but not see the local boys rustling up a football match at 4 am in the mist. After a good breakfast one can decide to spend the day lazing away in the camp site or going on a hike in the nearby mountains along the various ancient trails- the most famous one being the David Scott trail. Both me and my husband did a hike up one of the hills to the Mawphlang sacred grove - an amazing place to see and realize what it is to leave nature undisturbed. After the lazing or hiking, one can have a good refreshing swim or splash in the river next to the camp followed by a good lunch and more lazing around either by dozing off or by spending some quiet reading time with your favourite novel. Night time is more fun when you can barbeque your favourite foods by the open fireside and enjoy some good local music before finally settling in for the night. A great family with amazing kids to take care of all of your needs- only inform them what you need in advance. Both James and his better half Valarie are great cooks and tries to put up whatever you need. Great value at a very very reasonable price!!!
