Neelkantheshwar, as the name suggests is a Shiva temple. It is situated on a hill about 55 km from Pune around Panshet. The main attraction of the temple are 100s of statues and sculptures from Indian mythology. Most of them are from Ramayana and Mahabharata. These colourful statues make the entire temple complex colourful. The temple itself is a simple abode of Lord Shiva, with a Shivalinga in the sanctum santorum, just like any other Shiva temple. The hill is motorable, however one has to walk for about 15-20 min from the car park to the temple. This is very steep at places and can really test one's fitness.
Also an attraction here is a breathtaking view of the Varasgaon and Panshet dams spread adjacent to each other. I doubt if there is another place from where these water bodies can be viewed like this. On the other side of the hill, from where one climbs up, one can see the Khadakwasla dam as well.
A great day-trip overall, with some excellent views around. There's just 1 small shop that serves food, so it is better to carry own food and water.
