Owner description: Spectacular rock cut caves and elaborate sculptures of Hindu, Buddhist and Jain faiths are over 10 centuries old.

Ellora caves are about 30 min from Aurangabad, and very easy to rent car to get there. We stayed only 4 hours and could have easily stayed longer to explore more of the caves. Try to get there early morning to avoid (a bit more of) the crowds. Magnificent sculptures--- truly world heritage. Try to see the Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain caves----really special.

located about an hour away from the city of aurangabad, the ellora caves are a conglomeration of the three religions- buddhish, jainism and the hindu religion. The caves depict a variety of stories from real-life incidents to folklore tales and also excerpts from the ramayana and the mahabharata. You can take your 2/4 wheeler to almost every cave. The main caves are 32,29,21,16. you can see the rest if you have the time and the interest, but it just gets repetitive. The intricacy and the magnanimity of these caves simply spellbind the tourist. A must visit heritage site.

We made a day trip from Aurangabad to the caves located one hour away from the city. Although not as impressive as Ajanta, at first glance, the Kailsanantha Temple (No. 16) is much better than anything at Ajanta. Carved out of of rocky, cliff face, the details are stunning. Climb the steps located to both the left and right of the main entrance to get a fantastic view of it's grand scale. The rest of the caves, make for a pleasant, leasurly discovery, but are pretty beat up due to damage through the centuries. Take an autorickshaw or your driver to drive to the Jain temples. They are worth a quick look, but it is over a kilometer walk to take those in.
