Owner description: Spectacular rock cut caves and elaborate sculptures of Hindu, Buddhist and Jain faiths are over 10 centuries old.

This was as or more amazing than the Ajanta caves, with so much to get around and so much to see it really is an sight. We started from the earlier Buddhist caves and worked our way up through to the Jain sites but the main entrance leads you to cave 16 the most impressive of the caves, it was well worth going through the caves in order as it ca\\gave a real sense for the progression and merge of Buddhism and Hinduism.

Getting here is really easy (from Aurangabad) you can get...

(a) Coach Tour - This tour stops at a number of attractions during the day but I've been told that the amount of stops it makes really leaves you pressed for time at Ellora.

(b) Private Car - We got offered a private car for the entire day with stops around Ellora for 1000 R

(c) Public Bus - This is the budget back packer option at 54 R return journey. Buses leave regularly from the MRSTC bus station in Aurangabad and you can catch a return bus back from the road opposite the entrance to Ellora, just walk a small distance down and wave one (they're red).

Hope this helps as the price of the caves dropped a heavy weight on my budget and the public bus option saved me a fortune.

Beautiful caves with carvings, sculptures, paintings ranging from pre-Christ period to 6th century AD. The location is beautiful, the maintenance is good and one must see once to believe and understand what it is.

was awe struck by understanding the enormity of work involved in ellora. shows harmony in religion as hindu, buddhist & Jain caves coexist fromcave 1 to 34.it it is said it took 150 years or 5 generations to make cave no 16 -kailash This whole cave is made from single rock. idols are fabulous. In the center of cave, on 2nd floor a huge mahadev - "linga" is there. Cave no.10, 16 - "Kailash",21, 29, 32 are a must watch. If you have your own car you can take it to there so you dont have to walk or take auto . Good time to visit in winter season. Feels like it was abode of lord Shiva as most of temples are dedicated to him and Ghrishneshwar temple (one of the 12 jyotirling is also near by (1.5km)so you can take blessings of lord shiva.

Started my journey with Cave no. 16 - "Kailash", i really felt that it is really palace of Mahadev. This whole cave is made from single rock. Mahakali and Natraj idols are fabulous. In the center of cave, on 2nd floor a huge mahadev - "linga" is there. If you are in hurry and dont have much time to spend on every cave then just visit Cave no. 16 - "Kailash".

After that Jain caves are also very good. If you have your own car you can take it to there so you dont have to walk.

Good time to visit in winter season. And Ghrishneshwar template is also near by so you can take blessings of Jyotirlinga.
