Best preserved temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Though, many visit this site for the sake of erotic sculptures it showcase on all of its outer walls. This otherwise also signify true picture of India, how rich, culturally India was and definitely how open country it used to be!!

Unlike the perception of these temples being symbol of eroticism, a whole tour with kids was nothing like it.. Ofcourse it is abt couples but its history is much more beyond it... On top the guides are aware when kids are around and also the light and sound show narrated in Amitabh Bacchan s voice is also suitable for all age groups... Its a marvel of our rich history and is a must trip for all interested to explore India...

Lakshman Temple is 10th Century temple, located amongst Western Group of Temples at Khajuraho, a small village in Chhattarpur district of Madhya Pradesh India. These temples are part of UNESCO World Heritage site. The ancient temple was built by Yashovarman and dedicated to Vaikunth Vishnu, an aspect of Vishnu.

The entire temple complex stands on a high platform (Jagati) and the structure consists of most elements of Hindu temple architecture. It has entrance porch (ardh-mandapa), Mandapa, Maha-Mandapa, Antarala and Garbhagriha.Unlike other temples in Khajuraho, its sanctum is Pancharatha on plan. Its shikhar is clustered with minor urushringas. The wall portion is studded with balconied windows with ornate balustrades.

It has two rows of sculptures on temples outer wall, which include divine figures, couples and erotic scenes. The sanctum doorway constitute seven sakhas (vertical panels). The central panel is decorated with various incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The Lintel depicts goddess Lakshm, in the centre flanked by Brahma and Vishnu. The sanctum contains four-armed sculpture of God Vishnu. Main idollocated in temple has tri-headed, four-armed sculpture of Vaikuntha Vishnu. The main Idol central head is of human and two sides of boar (depicting Varaha) and lion (depicting Narashima).

The erotic sculptures in various positions at outer wall of the temple are unique, and depict finest sculptural compositions vibrating with rare sensitiveness & warmth of emotions and these are remarkable for their sculptural quality. The temple wall also contains fine sculptures representing hunting and battle scenes, procession of elephants, horses apart from variety of domestic and erotic scenes.

Built around 954. Main temple of the western group. Well preserved. Stunning sculptures provide proof that India is the land of kamasutra.
