“A little disappointed”
Reviewed February 18, 2013

Hotel was a little impersonal, rooms were tired but comfy and clean. Had issue with the barman. He was very unhelpful, tried to order food but did not seem to want to serve us.He was really not enjoying himself! No red wine available. Eventually we did get some food and a snack. Only stayed the one night so no chance to redeem himself!

The taj chandela, definitely lives up to the taj name in terms of service quality although i do feel the property in itself is showing its age and is in need of redo!
let that not stop you from booking , because the rooms are very comfortable and try to get a pool facing room with pool access for best connectivity to all facilities. Also the food here is average in comparison to other khajuraho hotels. Although for a similar price the radisson is a newer property, i cannot vouch for their service since we did not stay there.
But the taj still retains the touch i feel of being a old world hotel!

Room Tip: Rooms with poolside access.

I stayed only one night so did not get to experience the facility completely. My spacious guest room was fine, nicely appointed with good amenities. The room was clean and comfortable. The food was not great but acceptable.

The customer service, or lack thereof, came when I had a problem with the hotel's WiFi. The IT person could not solve the problem so he blamed my tablet computer. Although he promised me that he would cancel the charges for my first 30 minutes of usage and give me 30 free minutes, this was not done. When I went to pay my bill, I mentioned what I had been promised and was told that if I logged on I had to pay for it whether or not the service I expected was delivered. The desk clerk was rude. The IT person was arrogant and unhelpful. If he knew half as much as he thinks he did, he would have realized that the hotel computer system's firewall created the problem.

As part of an organised private tour, this hotel was selected for us by the operator. One can only presume because it is part of the Taj group. Of the 16 other hotels we stayed in around India, which mostly included other Taj properties, this was memorable for being the worst. We were greeted at check-in by one of the hotel management team who seemed confused by the concept that I was a Taj Inner Circle member. We were shown to a rather dated room with a weird electric blind arrangement that opened to show the bathroom behind a pane of glass. The furnishings had sadly seen better days and, once again with Taj, we had to pay to use the Wifi (something that should be free to guests in this class of hotel).

We skipped dinner at the hotel and took an auto-rickshaw to the brilliant Raja Cafe, a mile or so up the road (see my review also posted). Breakfast was a disappointing buffet arrangement, the food on offer deliberately selected for the huge numbers of mostly European and American elderly guests. Touristy, dated and very generic, plus a long walk to the Temples.

The Chandela is a quiet and charming low rise hotel in the sleepy town of Khajuraho were tourist flock to see the magnificent temples. Rooms are not luxurious but comfortable with flat panel TVs, a sofa and coffee table and desk. Bathrooms are small. Although they have no bathtubs they have generous sized glass, granite and stone showers with plentiful hot water. Rooms in this two story hotel face either the gardens or pool. I had a pool facing room and could step from my room to the pool only a few feet away and relax after several hours visiting the temples. The pool staff was happy to put two chairs outside my room on the grass to get some shade.

Room Tip: Choose a room facing the pool.

Khajuraho is an ideal second honeymoon destination and this hotel provides the best ambiance for a romantic get away. Service is impeccable. I wonder why the location and the property have been overlooked by travel shows on television !

Room Tip: Call the hotel helpline at the Chandela and they will guide you well depending on your preferences...

Hotel Chandela

We were a party of four persons that stayed at the Hotel Chandela in Kharajaho this past week for two nights. The hotel is just outside of the main town center within a 15 minute walk if desired . There are plenty of tuk-tuk drivers' if you need a ride, too. I would characterize our two nights as wonderful. The property is well maintained and the staff are super friendly and efficient. The rooms were well appointed with nice sized bathrooms with adequate hot water. I must point out that the in-house restaurant, Rasana, was also first rate. We had some of the best Indian food in their dining room on two nights. The prices were a little high by Indian standards but reasonable for the western wallet ($ 9 per person). Overall, the Hotel Chandela was a winner. For those interested in prices, the double room was about $105 including a great breakfast.I would highly recommend this hotel if you find yourself in Kharajaho.
