“Quieter side of life”

We stayed in the akhil for the second part of our holiday. A little more peaceful than the cliff top but still within easy reach of the restaurants and shops, Lovely swimming pool and gardens, nice clean rooms but a little dated and soon in need of some refurbishment. staff were great very attentive and full of recommendations on where was best to eat. Massages are the best and they should be promoting this side of the business more.

I stayed at the resort for two weeks and overall had a great experience there. The grounds are lovely and there is a pool and an ayurvedic centre on the grounds. Quite close to the cliff area where there are tons of shops and restaurants. The food at the hotel is okay although there are much better offerings cliff side. Staff were very helpful and kind. I was travelling alone and had a small room with no.a.c., it was a 'no frills' room but was quite cheap. I had a small, private outdoor area off my room with table and chairs which was the best feature. All in all, a great stay. I would stay here again, for sure.

We walked in off the street to this hotel after we had to cancel a tour due to our tour guide Euzebio D'silva trying to rip us off and putting us up in the cheapest nastiest places he could find.

We expected it to be out of our price range but we were given a price of 1600RS (£18) a night. After being subjected to the horrors of India by Euzebio this was paradise on earth.

The grounds are neatly manicured gardens, the pool is very clean and well looked after, the location is perfect as it backs onto the quiet Tibetan market and is a 2 minute walk to the cliff where everything is happening.

Now we stayed for 21 days so eventually a few cracks started to appear, there seemed to be two main guys on alternating shifts in reception. Vishnu we caught the name of and he was dubbed mr can-do by guests as no matter what was asked it just wasn't a problem and it would be done. The most perfect hotel employee anybody could wish for, he went above and beyond on every occasion. If this guy was overseeing EVERYTHING this would probably be the best hotel in southern India.
The other guy who we never caught his name was certainly pleasant but a few of the guests had dubbed him mr sarcastic.
Eventually if we needed anything from reception we would wait until Vishnu started his shift sometimes that could be midnight but its definately worth waiting.

We got to spend one week in a room then we had to spend 10 days moving rooms on a daily basis, even though we were moving from standard room to standard room I couldn't see the point but mr sarcastic told us that these rooms had specifically been requested by guests yet to book in. Fair enough we thought but some friends we had made were put into the rooms we wanted after complaining. The same rooms we were told wasn't possible for us to stay in. When we confronted me sarcastic about this we were met with, you guessed it, sarcasm. also numerous other guests told us they were offered 10 days for the price of 8 for staying long term. We eventually got this after fighting for it but not for the whole stay. Other guests claimed they were offered this.

The one and only bad point is the restaurant. The guy who manages this is awful, really lets the place down. He is more interested in trying to make commission off guests by working with the tuktuk drivers. You will find him telling you about all these wonderful events happening and he has a friend who will take you there and back.
Do not order the same meal as your partner because instead of getting two dishes you will just get the one to share don't be fooled into thinking this one to share will be twice the size of one portion either. Don't order the chicken burger as its a veggie bean burger with zero traces of chicken. We complained both times and the manager came told us we were wrong both times and walked away not wanting to discuss it further. Other guests sat nearby told me not to bother wasting my time as it was just a losing battle but they had also had the same issues with the chicken burger. Cue then a complete farce with kitchen staff trying to explain that they chop the chicken so finely that you can't see it or taste it. Then they were picking my burger apart and picking up breadcrumbs that encased the burger and was trying to pass the breadcrumbs off as chicken. I could see mushrooms, onions and mashed up beans but no chicken.
When the bill came I crossed out chicken and put veggie and went back to my room. The restaurant manager then came banging on my room door to have an argument with me.
He was also busted by many guests grossly ripping them off on the seafood. Just venture onto the cliff it takes two minutes and avoid all the bad service and to have to have the restaurant manager trying to sell you tuktuk tours at grossly inflated prices. My other argument was when anybody raises an issue with him he just says your wrong and walks away. Just not interested.

Other than the poor management and customer service treatment of the restaurant manager this hotel is absolutely fantastic and I highly recommend it to everyone. We would make a beeline for this hotel if we ever return to varkala, just avoid the restaurant which is easily done and have a great holiday here

I had an amazing time at the Akhil beach resort. The bedroom was basic but all you need really. Clean and comfortable. The ayurvedic centre is great. Dr D and her staff are lovely. Everyone working at the hotel go the extra mile to help you, they are all lovely friendly people and made my stay really enjoyable.

Room Tip: Bungalows seem to be bigger than other rooms.

We stayed here for a few days (far too short) on a family holiday.

We decided to arrive early and Manu from reception went out of his way to make things happen. We were travelling as a family of five. Unfortunately the rooms are not big enough to handle the extra bed. But, once again Manu came to the party and managed to get an additional room for 2 nights. We would recommend a room with and air conditioner. The pool facing rooms on the first floor have a really cosy private balcony.

The hotel has a really neat garden with a clean well maintained swimming pool. Although we lazed on the hammock occasionally, we preferred spending time at the beach at Varkala Cliffs. We loved the sea and beach.

The hotel does have good meals but service can sometimes be erratic. However, the hotel is located close to over a dozen restaurants on the top of the cliff. You will be spoilt for choice – Especially the fresh seafood which is really great.

Pity that the WIFI is limited to the reception area, but it’s free so no real complaints.

Room Tip: Upstairs with a private balcony and AC

Kind staff, clean accomodations, good food. We ae a family of two American-born parents and our newly-adopted daughter from Kerala. One man worked security and gave us advice on transportation after working the night shift. He's the one who spent 20 years in the Army. Rajesh the Food Service Manager allows his staff too shine; he and Manu were very kind to the three of us. Great food and beverages. Quiet at night. Chandra Babu, we thank you also.

stayed here over christmas and new year - had fantastic time. Pool was amazing and staff were great. Loved it. Garden's lovely and very quiet too. And the best masseur I have ever had is across the road - his name is Anhil , he is at the Ayur Theeram resort - truely magic fingers and very cheap.
No complaints at all - rooms cleaned every day to high standard.
