“Great little hotel overlooking a dirty spot of Beach - but then......”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 23, 2010

I stayed at the hotel for 2nights in April. I found this to be a great little hotel overlooking a dirty spot of beach filled with rubbish, and left overs of people who come to perform puja's for the dead - but then, a two minute walk away, you come to a lovely stretch of beach thats so refreshing from the dirty area you get to see when you open the curtains of your window. But baring this minor incident, I found nothing to complain about the Hindustan Beach Resort. Reception was warm and friendly, checkin/checkout in record time, room ( 201) I stayed in was huge, great views of the sea, spacious and spotless. The food I order in room service was delicious, reasonable and better priced compared to those at the shacks on the beach. Also, from the beach on the right, you could climb up the stairs to the cliff and there is a wide array of shops, restaurants, massage parlours etc. This area is worth a walk in the evenings.

I was a bit disappointed with the Ayurvedic clinic....1200 for a full body massage was a bit steep. Well, he eventually gave me a 15% discount, but still high compared to other places which charged 700 -900. I also did a yoga session for 600 but thought it to be totally unprofessional. One of the massage staff tried to teach me about 15 asanas in 0ne hour and then the breathing excercises and it was so rushed and confusing, that i felt there should be a more professional way of teaching yoga especially to someone learing it for the first time. I was torn between looking at the guy trying to do the exercise, do it myself and memorising it.

The hotel breakfast was very very disappointing. Staff totally disinterested. food cold, Choice of food restricted to very few choices. I think this hotel needs to do more to improve the quality of its breakfast. The restaurant on the top that serves breakfast offers great views.

The swimming pool is small, but clean. The hotel being right on the beach, should also do its bit in keeping the entrance to the beach clean. Placing dustbins, ensuring that vendors who sell icecreams and wot not keep dustbins and ensure people dont throw their icecream wrappers on the road, keeping someone on hand to inform people to keep the surroundings clean and pickup rubbish, should go a long way in giving the hotel a better seafront name and location !

Otherwise, a very nice hotel, and I would definitely stay there again. I could say, even better that the Taj Gateway hotel nearby on a cliff. Great value ! I hope this hotel continues to keep it up !

The hotel is situated at the South Cliff end of Varkala beach, yards from the sea and close to a large Hindu temple and some very good beach restaurants. It's about 15 mins from the more developed North Cliff area by walking along the beach or over the cliff top via the helipad.

We stayed in a suite overlooking the pool and beach for 2 weeks and the staff were fantastic. Really warm and hospitable and especially good with our 2 young boys (2 & 4).

The suite was really comfortable and spacious with A/c, mini bar, cable TV and a lovely view across the sea. We had a full breakfast there every morning which was a mix of local dishes and fruit, toast, eggs and croissants. We also really enjoyed the lunches and dinners from a comprehensive menu and the waiting staff really went out of their way to ensure our children were happy and comfortable.

The rooms were well cleaned every day with fresh towels and bed linen and the standard of the suite was very good.

I'd especially like to thank the management who were quick to help us out when the need arose and also to the pool attendant, Gopal, who played with our kids at the pool side and made sure they were safe.

Definitely recommend this hotel to anyone travelling with children in Varkala and looking for somewhere that can accommodate them in a safe and friendly environment.

We stayed at the Hindustan Beach Retreat in March 2010. We were worried about about the location of this hotel as there were very few pictures and we were concerned about this being too isolated. We need not have worried. The beach location is perfect and there are a few really good beachside restaurants which served delicious daily caught fish dishes. Along the cliff top are many good restaurants, shops, internet cafes and bureau de change. Varkala junction with its temple and shops are a short walk away. There is no end of Ayervedic treatments available on every corner, and dont miss the yoga on the beach at sunset - surely the most magical time of day anywhere along this coast. The hotel staff were excellent. Extremely friendly and helpful, we never opened a door or even laid our own towel around the pool for the duration of our stay! On the downside, the food in the restaurant was fairly poor. The hotel constantly asked for feedback though, and as this is clearly an issue I would think there would be steps taken about this - apart from that, the rooms were spacious and very well equipped and comfortable. The pool is a bit small but very clean and well kept.
I would definately stay at this hotel again.

I stayed here in Jan 2010, was disappointed at first when entering the lobby there is a terrible damp/moldy smell, was hoping my room was not like that, no problems the room was lovely for a single person it was huge, nicely decorated with large bed and seating area which looks out to the sea. The only faults were the chef on the second week who had not got a clue how to cook eggs, omlettes under done and poach took about 25 mins,(creamated). Too many staff in the restuarant who had not got much of a clue what they were suppose to do!! Observed for 4 days a half cut lemon on the floor under the bar with a dirty tissue, it moved or cleaned when one of the directors seemed to be there, and the restauant staff seemed to be busying around the guests then. food wise it was rubbish, location excellent, though when they built it why did the designer not put balconies on!!! a little over priced for Indian standards.

Stayed at the Hindustan Beach Retreat for 12 nights in January. Booked the hotel in October. I x twin and I x single occupancy. Arrived to find we'd been given 2 twin rooms with no balcony. After much consultation with the useless front desk staff we were shown around various rooms. All the twin rooms are on the 1st floor almost level with the pool. The rooms were dark and had a restricted view of the sea. We decided to settle for the room we were first allocated (Room 401). This was a very lage end room with good funishings and a huge queen size bed. Although it had no balcony it had panoramic views on 2 sides. only marred by the fact that the windows needed a clean!
Breakfast was served on the top floor with spectacular views. A buffet with eggs cooked to order. There seems to be a lot of staff aimlessly wandering around. Everything takes ages. The only time the staff sprang to life was during a 2 day visit from the managing director. The hotel is located right on the beach, at the south end of the North Cliff, the pool over looks the beach.
Varkala life itself seems to centre around the north cliff wich is a haven for young back packers and hippies of all ages. Every restaurant serves the same food with varying degrees of success. Seafood, curry and chinese with an attempt at pasta thrown in. After 4 or 5 days of this even a seafood and curry lover like myself was crying out for something else. We did find a Thai place called Hungry Eyes but my partner and my best friend both had upset stomachs the next day?
The only good places I can recommend are Cafe Del Mar on the north cliff, (a fine selection of eastern and western dishes). The Marine Palace and The Theeram both on the beach by the Hindustan Beach Resort.
Kerala is a dry state so alcohol is not readily available. Most places in Varkala sell beer, However it is served in mugs and the bottles have to be hidden under your table. You can get vodka, gin and rum in some places. Wine is not easy to find and is about £15 a bottle and of very poor quality.
Most of the accomodation in Varkala seems to be of the cheap and cheerful or not so cheerful type. Well suited to backpacking on a budget. There are 1 or 2 good quality hotels around, the Hindustan being one of them.
If you're looking for a holiday with good nightife and decent food with lots to do during the day. Varkala is not the place for you. Try Goa.
If you're backpacking and want a couple of lazy days on the beach then it's fine. However I wouldn't recommend more than 4 days unless you really like doing nothing and are prepared to eat the same things day in day out.

We stayed at Hindustan for ten nights in a room room overlooking the beach.
The staff was very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was good, other food OK, but there are plenty of options nearby. The Christamas dinner was great, and a bargain at Rs 750.

Our stay at the Hindustan came off to a bad start when the hotel reception staff failed to inform us about the additional charges and the compulsory Christmas dinner buffet charge of 750R per head (to be paid whether we wanted to eat or not).

The shift manager was not the least apologetic although he did admit that we had been misinformed... still, he offered us a discount which took the price down to almost the originally quoted price. As we were getting desperate and were so impressed with the location, we decided to give the place a go...

The Hindustan is perfectly located on the beach in Varkala with great views from our sea facing room.
The hotel pool was a lovely treat and the pool guy, Robert, was attentive and friendly at all times. We were really pleased with him.

The restaurant was empty most of the time and upon ordering lunch we realised why. The breakfast buffet was good though and had a wide selection of everything from traditional south Indian dishes to omelettes (cooked on the spot) and pancakes.
