Kerala Bamboo House

Don't get us wrong we normally travel in a tent but we stayed at the Bamboo house in late december 2013 and were charged about 4000 rupee a night so we expected something. This was our 5th choice since it was peak season and the other reviews were right. The huts are smashed together so that when one in our party was looking in the mirror in their room they could saw the activities in the bathroom in the hut across the path. We had an adjoining hut with an outdoor bathroom and you could literally hear everything. It was humorous when the couple next to us was a little too amorous and we actually interrupted them with our muffled laughter after a joke. The positives to Bamboo house is that the staff is helpful and very kind. they did move us from one hut to another but the structures and layout they are working with are minimally built and cramped. The location is perfect in the heart of Varkala right next to Sun rise restaurant which is the best view in Varkala. I would recommend it only if you could get it for 1200 rupee a night in the off season. Otherwise, I would learn from our mistake and book my stay at another resort several months ahead in this little European vacation winter getaway.

We did not stay in this resort but we did the cooking class and also went on a backwater canoe trip both organised through their tourist desk. We found the cooking class to be great fun and learned a lot about Indian cooking, we were given paper, pen and clipboard so one of us could take notes while the other did the cooking prep. Six dishes in 1.5 hours is pretty ambitious but we didn't feel like the chef, Ronnie, was rushing and he was more than happy to answer and encouraged questions. The food at the end was great, I just wish we hadn't had breakfast, six dishes between two people is a lot of eating! The backwater tour to Munroe Island involved a 1.5 hr taxi trip each way (included in package) and 2.5 hrs on the canoe travelling through narrow backwaters lined with houses and villagers going about their business. The boatman and the villagers we met along the way were all very friendly and happy to have their picture taken. We stopped for around half an hour to look round Munroe island, had some chai, learned about the plants, crops and local cottage industries but it wasn't pushed on us and there were no compulsory deviations to factories/shops etc. The accommodation looked great at Bamboo House and would probably stay there next time.

Rooms are dark, humid, odorant and mattress it is the worst mattress i had in my whole india trip. No hot water. We were in low season so it was not expensive, but we would never pay the high season price for this

Take a look at Clafouti

Considering that you are staying in a tourist enclave, this place is quite convenient. The facilities are good, the service OK - it is not their fault that the WI-FI connection is sporadic. Plenty of shops and restaurants nearby on the strip along the cliff edge. The Restaurant Kadaloram No. 1 (Nepalese staff) can be recommended.

We arrived at the hotel without a booking- it was recommended by a tuk
tuk driver who picked us up at the train station,no doubt in return
for a commission.

The hotel is on the cliff at Varkala, surrounded by bars and
restaurants, but its set back so we didn' t hear any noise.

None of the rooms have a sea view, as is the case with most of the
clifftop hotels. They are set in nice gardens and are single story
chalets.

We looked at a couple of rooms and chose one at 2000 rupees per night.

The room had a balcony at the front, separated from its neighbours by
a rattan blind so wasn' t private. The room was a good size and seemed
clean. There were two single beds pulled together, with a mosquito net
which had a couple of small holes.

The bathroom was open air and was very clean considering that. The
shower was cold water but was quite a good flow.

Theres free wifi at the hotel and they also run cookery courses. It
seemed well run and I thought good value for the central cliff
location.

One small negative - the room had an A/C unit but the manager told us
it wasn' t working when we took the room. We therefore just had a
ceiling fan and this was controlled by a switch outside the room.
Whenever we left tge room we kept the fan on to try and keep it cool,
but the staff would come and switch it off, meaning we returned to a
stuffy warm room. I can see why the hotel would prevent excessive A/C
use but turning fans off feels excessive?
