“Beautiful place”

Nice place if you like something "Goa-like", but not in Goa.
Pros: not-so-crowded, less "buzz and smokes", more family and "healthy" vacation place. Very dense concentration of yoga, ayurvedic clinics, massage and reiki-shops.

Cons: Big waves in sea can make your swimming experience quite challenging and tricky.
"Varkala" means just one 200m beach and touristy "village" atop of 30-m cliff. It can be quite tight, especcially during weekends.

Love to try to get over the huge rollers with their worrying undercurrent. Once over and out you can swim or float to your hearts content. This year we saw school of dolphins not far off from the Holy beach. I did swim out but apparently not quite far enough, my friend said they were swimming around me!!!
On the down side it's such a shame that there is so much litter. We see groups of women picking it up from the beach and throwing it into the rock side...as well as restaurants at the top sweeping their litter over the rock. Shame

Last Month, I visited Varkala, with my family. Unlike Kovalam, which has now become spoilt, Varkala is virgin. Not at all crowded, it is a place to enjoy. Total lack of Indian tourists, who make a place noisy, dirty (truth - even though I am an Indian), the place is laid back, calm and quite, has beautiful beaches, beachside sacks, great sea food and not very costly a place. Beaches are really enjoyable. Local auto taxis are available to commute, though, the beach side cliff road is the best option. It is a unique place, where sea meets cliffs..I hope that it does not becomespoilt like Kovalam beach and stays the way it is now. By the way, there is no shortage of hotels/homestays to suit every budget.

Arguably the best beach of the 3 I visited in Kerala. The shallow waters extend unto 50 meters seaward makes it ideal for the one who can't even swim. The sand is so fine and it is a pleasure walking around. The cliff top kiosks for drinks and food is a unnatural gift. Lots of locals too enjoy here and it wonderful to see people in swim suit and formal (locals )dresses enjoying the waves.
Some nice hotels are there on the sea side. One sad part is the temple coming up on the beach.

I had already been told by friends and colleagues who had visited Kerala that this was one beach which they rated amongst the best they had been to. As well as reading reviews that Varkala was definitely very picturesque and one of the better and less crowded beach resorts in Kerala, so I was very keen to visit! And I wasn't disappointed!! Just amazing, shunning picturesque cliffs, the water was so clean and clear... didn't go in as the waves looked a bit crazy but just wow! So beautiful, loved walking along the beach with the warm water touching my feet and amazing views of the cliffs with the restaurants and shops lined on top. Simply beautiful!
