“Very special place”
Reviewed July 9, 2012

this is a lovely place to stay - very stylish and beautiful. We stayed in the roof top room with a huge colourful terrace which was definitely worth paying extra for. the breakfasts are delicious and the service and attention to detail is faultless. it's in a good location, away from the 'back-packer' hostels on the other cliff, but it's an easy walk along the beach or a cheap ride by local taxi to get to all the restaurants and bars. we went out of season, when Varkala was very quiet, but was probably all the more lovely because of that! the lack of a/c might be a drawback when its very hot, but the room was shaded and cool so it wasn't a problem for us. i wouldn't hesitate to recommend Villa Jacaranda if you are looking for something a bit special, without having to pay premimum prices.

Room Tip: splash out on the room with the roof terrace!

It gives me a warm feeling to know that the effort we put in to making Villa Jacaranda just that little bit more special a place for our guests' stay does not go unnoticed. Your words of praise and genuine appreciation are very encouraging. Thank you!

We spent a week there ... we wanted to stay there forever !! Peacefull place, perfect for some good old sweet FA. Breakfast is superb and the staff absolutely lovely, the boss will suggest you all the best places around. Five minutes from the beach and some more from the village. Every room has a balcony where breakfast is served, fresh flowers every day, no tv and no AC but we definetely didn't miss them !

Such a lovely place, a beautiful garden, the house has been well renovated with some lovely touches and everything that has already been said is true, just felt a little 'over priced' for what was in effect a fairly simple room with no airconditioning and a really, really hard bed. Also afternoon tea was not included ( unusual in my experience ). Hard to put ones finger on it but despite wanting it to be perfect it wasn't. We managed to get our mattress changed for a slightly softer one but the lack of aircon was a problem. Bear in mind we had been travelling with Intrepid in India for six weeks so this wasn't our first experience of hard beds or heat.

Room Tip: room 2 had a nice verandah, some street noise.

In the ten years of running Villa Jacaranda, I have learnt it is not possible to please everyone. Having said that, it is always our endeavour to make all our guests' stay as pleasant as possible. I am truly sorry we did not live up to your expectations. Since your stay, the beds have new, slightly softer (I remain partial to firm mattresses), eight-inch mattresses. Air-conditioning is something I am dead against - there is plenty of damage being done to the environment without us adding to it. Ceiling fans, coupled with sea breezes, have been perfectly adequate thus far. Opinion about price varies. I recently had guests who suggested I could easily be charging far more for the rooms. Needless to say, I haven't acted on their advice...yet.

We are a family of six and stayed for only one night. Ajay and his staff made us very welcome. Ajay having lived in London was a great communicator, and his local knowledge was really helpful.
The accomadation was simple but beautifully and immaculately presented. We had a lovely large room with balcony.
Our breakfast was perfect and served with style in a georgous garden setting.
Two points to consider are lack of air conditioning and the walk to the beach is down a very steep hill.
sorry to end on a negative as this really is a wonderful retreat. Well done Ajay and gang.

Room Tip: Balcony rooms.

Many thanks for posting a review. I am so pleased you enjoyed your stay at Villa Jacaranda. It was a pleasure for us as well. I hope next time round you will be able to stay for a bit longer.

No, not negative at all. This is an opportunity for us to learn from our guests and implement changes wherever feasible.

I am personally against air-conditioning and have resisted it thus far. Not only is it unfriendly to the environment, it also robs one the chance of experiencing the place as it really is. Perhaps you noticed the climbing Jasmine just outside your bedroom window - it is there to provide our guests with its inimitable perfume (the flowers are only fragrant at night), a sensual pleasure that would be denied to them if the doors and windows were to be boarded up to maintain air-conditioning.

Villa Jacaranda is situated atop South Cliff, a tranquil, residential part of Varkala. And yes, the price to pay for its incredible location is a climb up and down a fairly steep road to the beach.

What a place..... Four exquisite rooms situated in a beautiful villa in the garden of Eden all with individual balconies/verandas in which you are served breakfast every morning. Delicious breakfast, served to perfection while we enjoyed the view of the luscious garden. Such a dream that we decided to spend out last day solely in the villa and was served the greatest lunch. The staff are all sweet and forthcoming. And the magnificent Ajay who owns and runs the villa also arranged a fantastic boat trip to the backwater for us. The images of this place still haunt us...

Room Tip: All four rooms have their individual charm.

We stayed here for 2 nights in November during a tour of Kerala and loved it so much came back for a 7 night break In this wonderful Homestay. Everything was as great as we remembered it. We had Room 2 (there are 4 rooms and we think this is the best) and spent many hours on the balcony surrounded by beautiful flowering trees the smell of jasmine and the sounds of the abundant bird life here. Ajay is a charming host and his attention to detail is obvious everywhere. Breakfast and afternoon tea on the balcony served by the ever smiling and helpful Pramod is a real treat. Only 5 minutes walk to the beach and the shops and restaurants of North Cliff this is a real oasis pf calm. We have travelled extensively all over India and this is without doubt the jewel in the crown

Did you ever recognize that there are places in our world with a good spirit?
If you are the kind of person that is sensitive enough you will enjoy your stay in Villa Jacaranda
every day.A large part of this spirit comes from the owner of the villa,Mr.Ajay Ojha , another part comes from his excellent staff, these people are really friendly and they try to make your
time in the villa as comfortable as possible. The third part of the spirit are the building and the wonderful garden with the pond, which is illuminated at night by candlelight so that one has the feeling to be located in an Indian fairy, and if Ganesh himself would suddenly appear one would not be surprised. The tropical sound of the animals at night reinforces that feeling.
Next morning a friendly waiter will serve you an excellent breakfast and if you are now looking at the garden in the light of the early morning sun you will find yourself sitting in the middle of a friendly tropical jungle with a lot of different colorful birds that make you almost forget to eat your breakfast by watching their games.
I stayed in Villa Jacaranda for 3 months and after a few days I was a member of the Jacaranda family. If I ever had a problem,I just asked Ajay for some help and soon my problem was solved.
The surrounding of the villa is peaceful and friendly. When you walk to one of the beaches (you can get there on different paths),some indian people will stop and wish you a good day,you can also have a look on one of the many temples on your way or buy some bananas in a small store.Once on the beach the watching of birdlife is going on,here you will see a lot of eagles circling round the cliff or watch some herons looking for some feed from the ocean.Every day of my stay in Villa Jacaranda was surprising (India is full of miracles) and full of adventures and the only day I did not like was the day of my departure. But hopefully I will be back soon and the I will spend some more days in paradise.

Room Tip: All 4 rooms are excellent

Words fail me to express the deep gratitude I feel - your kind and loving words fill me with happiness and hope. They are an affirmation that I am somehow fulfilling my humble purpose in life. We will all remember your stay of three months with fondness, the day of your departure with sadness. We send you our very, very best wishes for the future and hope you will come and stay with us one day very soon.
