The staff are so kind and bend over backwards to make your staff comfortable. I liked it so much I extended my stay. There is s restaurant but there is no menu you are showed what they have and it's brought to you. They also have been getting me fresh fish. The rooms are clean and drinking water is provided.

Mektoub is an offbeat place. Far away from the crowds, its peaceful and extremely pretty. Surrounded by paddy fields and coconut palms, beach is 100 metres walk away. All you hear is the sound of the waves. You have lovely birds as your unexpected visitors. It's perfect. Host Rafiq is warm and friendly, his staff always smiling and willing to assist. Food is good Kerala cuisine. Breakfast is a mix of continental and authentic Kerala fare. Their homemade breads are awesome. It's a very personalised experience. Beach here is clean and ideal for a swim. Varkala cliff is 25 minutes walk through the beach and abt 10 mins drive if using a vehicle. If one is looking to be close to nature, this is the place to be. Would suggest visitors taking the first floor rooms with the sea view.

Breathtaking view. Extremely great hosts. And irresistible breakfast. Once you get here it'll be extremely hard to leave. Like everyone else we ended up extending our stay as well. The only reason the place loses points is because they need to be pushed to clean your room and the room tends to get sandy. Other than that, must must must visit. It's an experience of a lifetime.

Pros:
1. Clean Linen, and toilets
2. Sumptuous breakfast, and
3. Spacious double room (two toilets) &
4. Ofcourse the sound of the sea waves.
5. Found the host to be very humble and polite, who listens to your every requests.

Cons:
1. First of all, it is not a 'resort' or a 'hotel', but sort of a homestay, a bit off from the Varkala cliff (8 kms) or beach, in a middle of no-where.
2. The nearest beachfront had stones lined up in front, with high tides, so forget accessing it.
3. The way to be the 'resort' passes through dark alleys (mud path), so have to be careful in the evenings.
4. Found the neighbours a bit loud, to wake up to the quarrels in the morning.
5. Buffaloes & village sheds block the view altogether.
6. Oh, the mosquitoes & bugs in the evening.
7. Got to know of free Wifi during the checkout time. That's a bummer!!

Verdict:
I would prefer to take a room near the cliff, which offered good choices of eatery, access to best beaches, and views at half the cost of Mektoub.

Room Tip: Double Room with a lawn view on the 1st floor.

Quiet soul enriching stay among palm trees and rice field, fresh jasmine scent in the room and nutritious delicious Kerala meals served anywhere you want with stories of Kerala's spirit and monsoons. Wonderful stay.

Room Tip: the room overlooking both the sea and paddy fields
