“great accomodation”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 16, 2013

The Palm Tree Annex is a new building with lovely rooms, comfortable beds and modern shower and toilet. Very good value for money. Breakfast is taken at the Palm Tree Heritage Hotel which is a short walk around the corner along the beach. The food is very good.Location is a 15 minute walk to the busy cliff area where there are plenty of shopping and restaurant opportunities.
We were very happy with our stay at the PTA. The only problem we had was that the room we had booked many weeks before (superior with sea view) was not available when we arrived. We were promised a room with sea view for the next morning, but again were told then, that no room was available. After not giving in, insisting and producing the printout of the booking we finally were given the room that was confirmed. After many hours in an indian Government bus I would have prevered not to have problems with our room booking especially after 50% deposit had been paid at the time of booking.

This was our third visit to Palm Tree Annex. We were impressed before and were not disappointed on this occasion, in fact we were even more impressed. The annex was a new venture when we stayed there last year and Babu has made some fantastic additions to what was already excellent accommodation and great value for money. We slept in what has to be the most comfortable bed in India, four poster with lush cotton sheets and pillows. Beautifully clean with all the necessary elements for a very comfortable stay. The food in the restaurant is second to none. We ate every meal there, three times a day and they were all excellent. We ate the fresh seafood in one form or another every night. We haven't visited any of the other restaurants in the area because we cannot believe that the food is better anywhere else.
There are comfortable sunbeds under a grove of almond trees where we relaxed most of the day. The service from the staff was fantastic. They are all friendly and nothing is too much trouble.
We will definately be returning next year.

Room Tip: First floor front room with a top sea view.

We were 2 adults together with our 6 year old son and we agree to reviews that place is very good and in perfect location, PTA is clean and nicely decorated and is using of all PTH amenities like restaurant; PTH has great restaurant and really PTA is placed 20m from arabic sea and 100M from PTH. PTA manager Mohamed working for Babu was great help and we really enjoyed our stay. We also got wireless in PTA apart from PTH restaurant too which was great help. We could highly recommend this place to anyone-) Thanks once again!

Room Tip: you just need to make choice between ground floor and 1st 2nd floor, all are good really

Before giving you my opinion about the property let me first describe what the place has to offer. Priced at a discount of ~3k from the main property, about 500 meters from the main Palm Tree heritage building, this property boosts of an amazing location-a stone throw from the sea-and i think possibly one of the best locations in Varkala. A multi storied house-the property has a home stay kind of feel to it. Rooms are moderately sized, have a bed, a small fridge, a table/chair but over all i would think fairly basic for the price. The highlight is the balcony-almost every room has a direct view to the sea.
There is no room service. There is a restaurant right next to this property and then the Palm Tree Heritage restaurant in the main building.
In the night, the connection between the main building and the annex is pitch dark but i was assured that it was perfectly save to wake-i would strongly advise a powerful torch or two.
Travel to all nearby locations is via autos or if close by one could walk. Autos are available just outside the property.
Food at the hotel in the main building is good-particularly the sea food. The beach -just off the main building is beautiful. We had a lovely time with our 1 year old son on the beach-though both of us did not know how to swim. The people-the manager Gopal is very helpful.
Overall a great relaxing location but barring the location i do not think it is a value for money proposition. One should go with a home stay exception rather than a premium hotel expectation (to be honest, the hotel website also mentions this.)

Room Tip: Ask for a corner room facing the sea.

We were a group of friends who stayed at the Palm Tree Annex over the holidays, and we were not disappointed! Previous reviews by others proved to be accurate. The management (same as for Palm Tree Heritage next door) were extremely efficient and helpful with all our requests.
Rooms were cleaned daily, and the beds were surprisingly comfortable. All rooms have either outdoor space or balconies overlooking the ocean. Try the catch of the day at the sister property. The location is absolutely wonderful and swimming is safe at the beach only a few steps away. Bliss.

We stayed in Palm Tree Annex for 4 nights at the end of a tour of Kerala. The building and rooms are beautifully decorated and well kept. The air con system in them are very effective if you are there when it is very hot. Each room has its own balcony and there is a small garden at the back of the property. It is about a 1 minute walk from Odayam Beach, which is an idyllic beach 10 minutes walk from the main Varkala cliff area. The rooms have a sea view which is a great place to watch the sun set. It is an extension of the Palm Tree Resort and is the more budget option, however the standard is far above budget. The Palm Tree resort restaurant is great place to eat.

We landed at the Varkala bus stop without any hotel booking or much knowledge about the place. It was an auto driver (a very helpful young chap named Mohammad) who brought us to Odayam after we told him we wanted a place closest to the beach.

After looking at the handful of options in the area, it was quite clear the Palm Tree Resort was the best. But unfortunately, it was fully booked. So we settled on their sister property, barely 100 meters away.

It's obviously not as grand as the Resort, but there are several advantages with Annex: you pay a lower price for a room, while availing all the facilities of the resort. And the maintenance standards of the two properties are comparable since they share the same staff. Annex is also newer, with brightly coloured rooms and brand new furnishings.

We were very satisfied with the rooms, which are very large and very clean. More rooms are being added to the second floor, but we didn't find the ongoing work to be a problem.

Since work was still being finished while we stayed there, we can't comment on a lot of areas -- the reception was not operational, wi-fi had not been set up, there was no intercom in the rooms, etc. But the very helpful and extremely friendly staff more than made up for all that, and we never really missed anything or had any reason to complain.

A word about Odayam -- you won't like it if you're the type who loves attention from hawkers, touts and auto drivers. In that case North Cliff is where the action is. If you're looking for something akin to a private beach, away from the madding crowd, Odayam is the place to stay.
