First visited in Jan 2011 when the cottages were first opened and loved it. Returning in feb 2013 to find it even better. There are now 10 cottages on the beach a brisk 20min walk from the heat and commercialisation of Varkala cliff. They have added a little restaurant to provide breakfast and any drink/snack requirements, but the atmosphere is still peaceful and laid back. The team who run it are friendly and attentive and nothing is too much trouble. In short highly recommended.

It is a very nice and quiet place to stay. Its more quiet then the cliffs. The Cottages are big and clean and the Seaview is beautiful. Also the People who run the place are very friendly and its nice to be with them.
We had a great time there and really we love this place. For relaxing is perfect and one of the nicest places i've been in kerala.

We were very happy to have found this place: great value for money, very good location, nice food and very friendly staff. The beautiful cottages are spacious and each have their own balcony.
It's a very peaceful place where you can just relax and enjoy life in Varkala. Also very close to the beach and just a 10 min walk from the shops. Lovely !

We stayed at Maadathil for 6 nights in January and had a great time. Odayam beach is much nicer than the main beach at Varkala (less rubbish, less people, less hawkers), and the cottages here look out onto it. It's about a 20 minute walk to the north cliff - if you're here for a few days you'll probably want to go up there most nights as the menu at Maadathil isn't very big, and there are only a couple of places to eat nearby. You can get rickshaws pretty easily but unless you book one it won't come all the way to Maadathil, you will have to walk for a couple of minutes to get one.

Muhajir and his team are all fantastic, and amazingly helpful if you need anything. When we arrived, one of them even shinned straight up a palm tree to fetch some coconuts for us! The cottages themselves are great - very clean (and cleaned every couple of days while you're there too), and spacious.

My wife and I booked 2 nights at Maadathil Cottages, as we were captivated by Odayam Beach and the place we were staying at was fully booked. Those 2 nights extended to 9, and we only left to fly overseas and get back to work. There are 9 large, well built and warmly decorated cottages, comfortable from all standpoints, in a lush garden with coconut palms. No A/C and truly no need for it, generously sized windows ensure a nice flow of fresh air. No mosquitoes either! The property stands a few steps from the beach, where you will be urged to assist fishermen in their daily duties and get the bonus of attending the never ending discussions on how to split the catch. The food is simple and freshly made on your order, it will take a while but it's totally worth the wait. Both Indian food and Western are available, and you can choose to dine at the little restaurant or in the intimacy of your own veranda. The service is outstanding, everyone is sincerely interested in your needs and will do everything to make you feel at home, while remaining not intrusive at all. Everything is slow paced, which is great to unrev and get in sync with the atmosphere of this unique place. All guests seem to understand and share this, and there is no music or loud conversations that may disturb your peace and relaxation. The cottages are close to the South of a Hindu temple, and to the North of a Mosque, therefore mornings and evenings the mantras, bhajan and prayers, mingled with the natural beauty of the surroundings, will add the mystical enchantment to your experience. If you plan to be anywhere near Varkala, this is definitely the place to stay. You may also find it difficult to make up your mind to leave! If you have any business in Varkala Beach, it is only a 20 minute walk to the North Cliff but it'll save you the hassle of staying in a busy and noisy location.

Room Tip: Unlike the others, the Lotus Cottage has two verandas. The one on the back side faces a huge pond filled with lotus flowers, vibrating with birds, butterflies, grassing calves, absolutely gorgeous. One of the verandas will always be in the shade, and opposed windows and doors enhance the flow of fresh air.
