“Amazing place away from the hassle of the cliff”
Reviewed January 23, 2013 via mobile

We stayed at Maadathil Cottages for 3 nights in January and had a brilliant time. The cottages are located on Odayam beach which is a 20 minute walk from the north cliff with its busy shops and restaurants. So close enough to be able to go there if we wanted but a good enough distance away for complete peace and quiet if we didn't. The beach at the cottages is beautiful and we spent the morning just watching the fishermen bring their nets in with very few tourists on the beach.

The room itself was clean and spacious. There was no air conditioning which I thought might be a problem but with the fan the cottage stays cool as its construction means it doesn't overheat too much.

The breakfast was delicious and the staff very helpful. They brought us a very nice coconut drink when they managed to get some off the trees.

Only thing is the remote location is a bit tricky to get to at night if you don't have a flashlight. But with one it's no problem just walking along the beach.

Would definitely stay again.

We stayed here for 4 days shortly after arriving in Kerala in November 2012. We really enjoyed our stay. The cottages are lovely, very clean, well equipped and romantic! It is a very relaxing setting, surrounded by coconut palms and with a seaview. Tasty food can be ordered and delivered to your cottage by the staff or there are a variety of good restaurants just along the cliff. The overall feeling that you get at Maadathil is that the owners and staff really want you to have a peaceful and enjoyable stay - and they make it impossible for you to not do so!

Room Tip: Rooms behind the pond overlooking the sea.

We stayed in 2 of the cottages for 6 nights and had a great time. The staff are so lovely and helpful, making sure your stay is quite and peaceful. The location is away from the hassle and bustle of the north cliff of varkala which made the stay very relaxing. But only a 20 min walk along the beach from the north cliff that has lots of places to eat and go out. So the best of both worlds. Very clean cottages with lovely coconut grove and beach in the front and rice pattie and lotus pond behind. We saw Otters, kingfishers and mongoose when we where there. Every morning the local fisherman pull in the nets which is great to watch. It is a real gem and I would defiantly go again and we all felt we had made a friend in the owner and all of his staff. You gotta try the banana lassi's.

Room Tip: All the cottages are the same accept one that is very large, so if you are going for a very special...

Access to Varkala's eating places but not being stuck with the tourist hordes - this was ideal. About a 20minute walk north of NorthCliff to Odayam Beach (get auto to take you to Oddayam not Varkala Beach), along a path, take a torch if you are walking at night. Beach here busy with local fisherman pulling in the early morning catch, fascinating to watch, then v quiet rest of day, even in high season (Dec '12). Then at night you get to fall asleep to the sound of the waves on the shore... bliss! Run by lovely, polite, helpful guys who keep the cottages immaculately clean and cook up good food from scratch (order before you get hungry as it takes time, but is totally fresh and worth the wait!) Some of the beach places have over-friendly dudes who seem to think this is the way to attract punters, and it often omes over as sleazy - the fellas here are just really nice guys. Highly recommended. Contact them in advance as they only have about 10 cottages and they will book out. I didn't like the North Cliff area as it is a total tourist ghetto, but it was handy to be able to go and have dinner and a beer there, or lunch, and then return to the peace of Odayam. If you don't like crowds, stay here!

Very good new cottages. Simple but working bungalows near the beach. All the the stuff is very friendly and helpful. You will get the breakfast, dinner etc.. to your own balcony if you wish ! Very relaxed area were you can see the water buffalos swimming and fishermen towing their nets. The Odayam beach is quiet and and mostly black sand.

Room Tip: You can get riksa directly to this place at about 100r. Mention Odayam beach/Maadathil Cottages. You...

Very nice cottages almost right on the beach. Simple and clean, no luxury feeling perhaps, but that is not intended. The brothers are very friendly and helpful. Rooms are immaculate. As everywhere else hot water can be infrequent. You'll live. The beach is blacksand mostly, but better swimming than in Varkala itself. Be careful with those waves. NorthCliff Varkala tie-die hazzle shops and restaurants are a 20 min walk which is not fantastic at night if you are a single woman traveller. (Unless you are a tough cookie, i would stay at the cliff.) Bring flashlight in any case. Its a hard to find place even with a tuk, and still a 7min walk unless you insist to be driven to the door, it is possible but longer, and if the driver can find the place. Bring phonenr. The place itself is gorgeous and expanding with a pool I believe nxt yr. But your restaurants options are limited, you will have to walk. Of course you can eat here, but there are more people, options and life at the cliff. But there is quite a decent place just 2mins south. The walk north from here is also quite spectacular. Very quiet here if that is what you are looking for, relax under the palms and soforth, get your juice delivered at the terrace, but expect no nightlife. Far cheaper places on the Cliff, so i wouldn't raise the prices any further here. You will be pretty much sharing the beach with apprx 5 others, (as long as that will last...), on this postcard beach.

Room Tip: Everything is good, price rises (maybe a tad too much) with some larger ones.

We had the most amazing NY period here with Maadathil. We stayed 3 nights and couldn't have been happier. The cottages were spacious, beautifully decorated and the bed was unbelievably comfortable. We fell asleep to the sounds of crashing waves and awoke to the bustling of haggling fishermen and cows. A stunning 20 min walk into the main strip, we absolutely loved being a little out of the madness. We could chill and relax and then wander in for a beer and some 'town' excitement.

The brothers who run the place and their team couldn't be more friendly and helpful. There was initially some confusion with our booking as I forgot to confirm however whilst I was in a mild panic, they made sure I was taken care of and ensured I had a hut. I couldn't have been more grateful for this effort.

It really was a perfect NY!!!! I will definitely be returning here.
