I stayed at Sharanagati Yogahaus for a couple of nights with a friend in November 2016. It was great! Hari was very polite in our initial emails and the reservation process was easy. The room we had was lovely and clean, and the grounds were peaceful, lush and beautiful with lots of trees.
Yoga was amazing! In the morning, we woke up to incense everywhere which was really nice. We started at 7am with breathing and meditation, then at 8am we had an introductory two-hour yoga class. My friend and I were beginners in yoga so Hari was kind enough to dedicate one of his teachers to help us ramp up. At 10am, after 3 very relaxing hours, we had breakfast (fresh fruit and porridge), and tea, in a communal setting. I really enjoyed that aspect of sitting down with fellow travelers/yoga enthusiasts, sharing a meal and exchanging experiences.
We then had free time until lunch, so we walked down to the Black Beach. It’s an easy 5-minute walk to the ocean from the yogahaus. The black-sand beach was very beautiful, although the waves were quite big and we got wiped out by a few. Major bonus for me was that that beach was not touristy and was pretty empty. There’s also some dramatic cliffs that you can walk on to get to the more touristy part, and there’s a gazillion waterfront restaurants on the cliff. My shot out to the very first one you’ll encounter (can’t remember the name, but it had 3-4 tables down below) – it had a mind-blowing fish curry (“my grandma’s recipe” said the cook).
There’s lunch included, and then in the afternoon you do a couple more hours of yoga, which was also very nice.
After a couple of days of this, we left Varkala refreshed and rejuvenated. I've been doing yoga every day since!
Only warning - we got there late at 1AM and the rickshaw driver struggled to find the place in the dark. We were lucky that we had the night watchman's cell phone number and the rickshaw driver was able to call him and figure things out. If you're coming late, make sure you have that!
Ah, second warning – take lots of mosquito repellant and use it without fear. Varkala has tons of mosquitos and they were very annoying. Not anything particular to Sharanagati per say, just to the entire area LOL!
