If you want to stay away from the hustle and bustle and just relax near the shore then this is a good place. Wood House is kind of no frills place in the sense that maintenance is low, rooms are small and bathroom even smaller. Absence of Intercom in the rooms is a big drawback, however, for the price they charge you can't complain much. Restaurant has been outsourced to third party, food there is just okay. You can get much better food by spending same amount of money at a number of decent eateries on the cliff. However, the seating of the restaurant just beside the shore lures you at least for the morning and evening tea. Complimentary pick up and drop to and from the Station/bus stand is also an admirable feature. I would suggest not to try their Ayurvedic Massage services because I found it totally not worth the money spent.

Room Tip: Ask for the room (towards the sea) on the first floor to get a good view.

This hotel is very poorly managed and not worth of staying. Here is my experience

We booked deluxe sea view room. The rooms were located on the ground floor (201 - 203) from where we cannot see the sea.
About room -- The room size is very compact and bathroom is very small. The TV has poor reception and there is no phone to call room service. The room provided to us was in very poor condition. Everything like bedding, chairs etc is of poor quality. It seems that the ceiling fan was not cleaned from several months and literally turned black. The rooms need serious upgrade.

Service -- The service/security etc is managed by 1 Tibetan boy. Most of the time he was not available in reception. At times we have to wait for long hours just to change the bedding or get drinking water. Every time if you need any room service or do cleaning we will have to go to reception and search for the boy as phone is not provided in any of the room.
We stayed in this hotel for 3 days but somehow could managed the cleaning of room by the room service boy only once and that too after serious follow-up and escalation to Shankar ,the supervisor, who used to visit the hotel frequently.
On the 2nd day when we asked to change the bedding we were told that there is no stock of bedding available

Food -- The hotel website says that breakfast is included in the hotel tariff. On the first day when we asked Shankar he said there is no buffet breakfast instead 100Rs discount will be given to each person from the total bill. The restaurant is outsourced to another Tibetan person who charges exorbitant price for the menu. Further more we observed that the restaurant owner is using 3 different rate cards. We corrected our food billing amount 2 times because the rate card given to us shows the price of the 1 item as 70 Rs where as the billing person uses different rate card which shows 120 Rs.
In any case you will have to shell out 100-200Rs extra for the breakfast alone.
Even after this incident we continue to eat at the same hotel. The food is good but the service is very very slow. During meals we have to wait for 15 min for the next item to come.

Anoop the hotel owner initially confirmed that 1 free veg dinner will be given to us as we did a group booking for 3 days. On the day of dinner when we asked Shankar about the dinner he politely told us that we can order anything from the restaurant but management has approved only 100 Rs per person. What a way to fool the customer. Later when we asked Anoop he agreed to provide dinner with few items. But till then we totally lost interest in this hotel and decided to cancel the dinner and skipped the next day "free breakfast"

The only good point about this hotel is its location. You can see the beautiful view of the sea from the small restaurant. The hotel is located on north cliff of black beach. The beach is very small say about 300 mts and mostly submerged in the water. The path to beach passes through rocks which is very risky. Looking at my experience I would not recommend this hotel to any body. There are lot of hotels available in Varkala cliff which offers a good deal.

I was amazed the moment I saw the hotel. It is located just at the beach. The rooms are shack kinds with thatch roofs. The staff was very courteous and at our beck and call, even though it was off-season that I visited. Food was really good and they even modified it as per my tatste and preference. There is a small book-shop and a spa adjacent to the hotel, which adds more fun to the place. A lovely lovely place, in fact far more worth for the price that I paid for staying there. Would definitely visit once more.

Room Tip: All our facing the sea, so it is up to you to decide whether ground floor or first floor.

We checked in at 12 midnight, it took some time to get in touch with the concerned people, Anoop and Santosh but soon we were able to settle down into our rooms. The place is situated in a rectangular plot of land, with the smaller sides facing the road on one side and the beach on the other. Black beach is not much of a beach, its just rocks. The rooms are spacious, TV didn't function. But the best part is, there's a small road by which you can walk to the Cliff and the beach and the view from there is just brilliant. There's not much space for parking cars, you can park only one inside the compound. The restaurant is closed during off-season, but its wonderful just to sit in that area and see the waves crash against the rocks. Oh, and there's a half decent library in the office, you can borrow the books. The place is quiet and peaceful, and I'd recommend it to anyone who's travelling on a budget.

We stayed in one of the beach huts on this property. It is about a 5-10 minute walk to the beach (passing many caves, restaurants and shops). The hotel itself does not have a communal area so it's hard to meet other travellers and there isn't anywhere to sit outside at the hotel. However, the beach is what you are there to see and it's lovely to sit on and swim in the sea. We killed quite a few bugs in our hut so it's not for the squirmish. The bathroom was fine, towels and bedding were a bit limited.

Room Tip: Get the beach hut!

Woodhouse Beach Resort was a great stay! When my husband and I arrived, they upgraded our room for free because it was at the end of the season. The staff is very friendly and helpful, always saying "hello" and making seeing if we needed anything for our room. The location just north of the main area of Varkala, so it's peaceful and quiet. They have the best breakfast, too! I highly recommend and would stay here again!

Me and my mom stayed at Woodhouse Beach Resort for two weeks in December 2011 and we couldn't have found a better place! It was just perfect for us.

If you're looking for a big luxurious hotel where all the tourists are you might wanna keep looking (actually you might not even wanna go to Varkala), but if you're looking for a small, genuine, convenient place with beautiful location and the best service possible you should definitely stay here.

Just as for Robotfish (see "Another Christmas At Woodhouse Review"), our very first impression was actually not perfect - the room seemed smaller than we had thought and we couldn't get the AC to work. We were probably a bit grumpy after having travelled for almost 24 hours, and already the next day we could see everything with different eyes. The staff were quick to fix the AC, and the room actually had everything we needed. As soon as we had got some distance from our western and sometimes unpersonal standard, it didn't take long until we were confident that there was no other place in Varkala where we would rather have stayed.

The hotel is located at the end of the beach walk, just after the cliff, by the small and quiet Black Beach. We really appreciated to stay in a less crowded area, but still close to the cliff and within walking distance from all of the beach walk. Woodhouse is located much closer to the water than if you stay on the cliff, and you can actually lie in bed and hear the waves beat. The restaurant has one section just by the sea, and we totally enjoyed having our breakfast there each morning. The closeness to the ocean was extremely soothing and made us both feel more relaxed than we had done in a very long time.

The staff were great and incredibly helpful in every way. They always made sure we were happy and provided an impeccable service. At the end of our stay I became sick and had to go to the hospital, and the hotel manager Anoop immediately took me there and helped me and my mom to get through this very anxious day. Each one of the staff were very friendly and really contributed to making our vacation even more enjoyable and memorable.

I had two amazing weeks and will definitely stay at Woodhouse again if I go back to Varkala. I highly recommend this hotel!

Room Tip: We stayed in one of the rooms at the upper floor, which I think provides a bit more privacy than sta...
