“Fantastic Fantastic”
Reviewed December 9, 2011

Our trip to Varkala was made even more wonderful by choosing to stay at Kaiya House, great themed rooms decorated in differing styles, the whole house is a joy with a great ambience. Debra our host took care of our every need and organised our trip to Trivandrum which she accompanied us on, which was fantastic with a wonderful driver. Debra organised a motorbike for us with the same taxi firm she uses, which allowed us to explore the area more fully and see some of the beautiful surrounding countyside, the villages and beaches a few Km's south of Varkala are great to visit either by motorbike or taxi. A special thanks goes to Babagee and her sister for the wonderfull breakfast and coffee on tap. If you intend to stay in Varkala don't overlook Kaiya House.

What a great place. within a short walk of everywhere you will want to go and with a wonderful host who makes you feel like you are visiting freinds who you have not seen for a while. The place is immaculately clean and as insect a free hotel as you will find in Varkala. Debra has a fantastic orientation walk for all new guests which you would be foolish to miss and do ask her for the 7k walk along the seafront its a 'must do'. The 'aunties' who help run the hotel are a great help and Bobbshees traditional breakfasts are a delightful way to start each day. Debra also has a prefered rickshaw driver who does a great tour of the local area showing you some great traditional sights. I can not speak too highly of this hotel.............and on your visit please do visit the temple elephant each day with a treat of bananas and fruit (siddharatha is a lovely old thing)

Room Tip: all are good but the rear rooms are away from the road which may make them quiter

This place is number one in Varkala for good reason. Debra goes above and beyond for each of her guests in everything she does. She helped us arrange a car and driver for our next destination, ensured our laundry was done, and—best of all—took the time to walk with us around the town to explain the history and to show us her favorite places. Moreover, it is a comfortable, beautifully decorated place with a very good breakfast, and just a short walk from town and the beach. Factor in the reasonable price and the very sweet dogs and I don’t know why you would stay anywhere else in Varkala.

I've been traveling in India for over 2 decades and have never seen anything as unique, spotless, or beautiful as the Kaiya House, even in hotels costing much much more. From the moment you walk into the spacious reception area your eyes are treated with artfully placed antiques, furnishings and tapestries. Debra, a transplanted ex-pat American, offers the kind of hospitality you'd expect from a beloved relative. Green tea served in china cups, themed rooms where you can imagine being in Japan, the old American West, or a British barons manor instead of near one of Kerala's most beautiful beaches.

The house is beautiful both inside and out with ample spaces to relax in the newly installed garden gazebo, or the roof-top lounge, or even the library with it's flat screen TV. Debra's staff prepare delicious breakfasts in a spotless kitchen, also newly renovated in soothing Keralan colours. Debra's personal touch brings magic to every corner of Kaiya House. Who else would take newly arrived guests on a tour of the cliffside beach area, pointing out all the best restaurants and cafes along the way?

Room Tip: All rooms are fantastic.

Very happy with our choice of Kaiya House in Varkala. Debra, the owner, her family and staff are warm and helpful beyond words.
Our stay was most relaxing after spending 3 weeks on the travel trail. Located a short walk from the tourist cliff area, and in the other direction again a short walk to the small cafe, shopping area, local ghat and Hindu Temple.
Debra gave us a short walk around the area, showing us short cuts, the bus stand for down town, good spots to eat and where the good shopping is. This would be a good place for a single woman as the house in safe and secure.
Kaiya House remodel should be complete, as it was in the finishing stages when we stayed October 7. Local artists were working on the well decor, and tileing the courtyard all done with good taste and local color.
Our room had good air-con, a comfey bed, and beautiful decor.
Breakfast was our choice of basically anything the cook could make. We opped for oatmeal, fruit salad and dark bread toast, butter and jam. This was so good that we had the same for each of our 4 day stay.
TV room was home like and had oddles of channels to chose from. And I should add that coffee, tea or ice tea was offered everyday on our return to the guest house. Well done Debra, our best stay in 3 trips to India.

My partner and I tried to book in here but it was closed for renovations, however Debra the owner invited us to come and have tea with her and we are glad we did. We were given a very solid recommendation of another place to stay, given advise on the area and some of the must sees and treated to a tour of this beautiful home.

This is a hub of fascinating objects, with sculptures, paintings, rustic furniture and colourful tapestry in every corner, complemented by white walls to give the feeling of space and air.

Debra's vision is to create a place to inspire artists and creatives to work, recentre or just be. Kaiya house will be opened for business again in September and I for one cannot wait to get back there!
