“The place to stay”
Reviewed January 18, 2014

The hotel is part of German Bakery. This is the second property. The Beach hotel original is below the German Bakery. The "Beach Hotel II" is a four story building with shops on the ground floor, a restaurant "Fusion" on the first floor and rooms on the top two floors. They are also have a parking and road connection unlike many other hotels on the Light House beach. Both the hotels and restaurants are run by German Lady, whom we could not meet and say hello though. We stayed in the Beach Hotel II, room 202.

The first thing you notice is the spotlessly clean stairs and corridors. Once you enter the room you are welcomed by a large french window and a quite big sit out area beyond facing the waves. The rooms are decorated very tastefully with terracota tiles. The toilet is exceptionally clean. In fact every thing about the hotel is done with good amount of tasteful thought. I think they have about 10 rooms between the two floors out of which 3 on the second floor are air-conditioned. From all the rooms you get a full view of the ocean and the light house beach as the hotel is located in one corner of the beach adjacent to the light house. The rooms are basic with no wardrobes or in-room tea facility but they do have a television (in case you want) and a phone to connect to the reception. They only serve drinks in the room but no in-room dining service. That should not be a problem as food is available in the "Fusion" restaurant downstairs. My only suggestions would be to put a ceiling fan in the balconies and some soft towels. After few days of sun burns soft towels would be very much necessary (my personal desire).

The restaurant is called "Fusion" because in the menu they have food options from east and west on either side and a fusion menu in the middle. The options are not too many though. But the menu is slightly different in look and feel from the many other restaurants on the light house beach and the serving of the dishes and garnishing are also quite nice.

The whole team of Beach Hotel II are very helpful and ever smiling. I can't say the same for the people in the German Bakery though.

Comparing with many other stay options on the light house beach, this may be a bit expensive but you can be assured of cleanliness, great view and welcoming smile. If you want to stay right on the beach, don't want regular business or luxury hotel look and feel, want a clean well decorated hotel room to spend a relaxing time then this is the place I sincerely recommend.

What a pleasant stay we had at The Beach Hotel II ! The rooms were spacious and luminous, with excellent taste and very comfortable beds, and the large windows overlook the best view of Kovalam Beach. It was very enjoyable watching the sunset on the big balcony decorated with beautiful furnitures. The bathroom are perfectly done as well. We couldn't stay in a better hotel!

We chose this hotel because it's right on the beach and was said to have nice rooms/balconies. Well, you are right on the beach with access to the promenade on the lower level. But the rooms are just ok at best as far as finishings. They are large and the balconies are of a nice size, but nothing fancy. I would consider this an upscale backpackers hotel. We ended up only staying one night and moving to The Leela for the second night because there really is nothing to do but sit in your room or at the restaurant and we had a baby with us. There is no pool.

However, as mentioned in other reviews, the staff is very friendly, catering to your every need. The food at the restaurant was good, not stellar. But they did arrange for us to have fresh lobster one night and I would highly recommend the garlic and butter lobster. Yum!

I have been there last april with my partner.
The location is good. in my opinion is the best located hotel in all the beach. I loved the huge windows. The big terrace with the confy seats and the big room with clean toilet with hot and cold water.
Overall a very good experience! Maybe The price a little bit too much for the month I stayed there.

Fantastic. A cool place. Clean rooms. Great views. Off the beaten track, but not so far you can;t get involved. A great manager with a great team. I first came to this beach in 1989, backpacking and staying in beach shacks in a place with very few places to eat/drink, and then returned in 1993, when it was accessible to package holidays. Ten years on, with the package holiday mass influx but a memory and the resort much more focussed on adventurous families, ageing hippies and Germans seeking that perfect Ayuvedic massage, and everyone told me this beach had become a tourist nightmare. Not true. Yes it's more developed. But, yes, it's an easier holiday destination too. Great food (the best of which we had in the Fusion restaurant in the hotel - though the thali at 'Lonely Planet' came a close second). Good surfing - though be careful to keep an eye on your kids, if they're new to swimming. Brilliant tailors too. Check out Chandra (follow the signs towards the Lonely Planet restaurant from the beach). Don't believe the pro-Varkala hype. This beach still rocks.

Room Tip: AC isn't necessary. But it's nice...

We have had our best holiday ever on beach 2 hotel kovalam. We celebrate our 25 years wedding annivesary and Melanie, Thelma and the whole staff surpriced us with flower, fruit, danish music etc. Everything on this hotel is perfect. We can give it our best recommandations. Try it !

First, the general manger was tremendous. Took personal care to make sure everything was perfect. Room had great view (Room 203). Air-conditioning worked great. Has a refrigerator for keeping your drinks cool. Clean, comfortable. Basic decor. Good for couples and families. Right on the beach, and a nice clean beach ( Kovalam).

Downsides, cash only. Wifi is provided by another shop, and they were on vacation so we had no wifi.

Restaurant food is excellent. Dishes from Rs 120 ($2.50 USD) vegetarian dishes, up to $18USD Lobster ( delicious steamed over vodka) and everything in between (calamari or fish main for $6). Nice selection of locally- flavored cocktails for $5, too.

Nice view from restaurant over the beach.

Can rent surf-boards and body boards at the beach. I paid Rs30 for 30 to 45 minutes on a body board as a first-timer. Very fun. Please swim between the flags and do not go out too far. There are lifeguards, but the current is strong.

Why not five-stars? Cash only in 2012 is an inconvenience, though minor. A couple minor misses on the menu (a dry almond tarte one night), pillows could be Bit fluffier. The hotel will arrange a car and/or from the airport for $14 (Rs700) each way. The local taxis are $8.50, but the car is more comfortable and convenient, and the driver is not trying to sell you anything. We booked it to pick us up and drop off and the little luxury and convenience of this was worth it.

But, for less than a Super 8 or DaysInn in the USA, this is a great place right on a tropical beach.

We'll stay here again.
