As a YMCA we found this place very disapointing and we are no strangers to YMs. We booked a top of the range room on the ground floor as my wife cannot easily manage stairs these days. The room was clean, no criticism there, and vast. But very little furniture so it was like living in a cave. One decent chair does not equate to a top rate room even in a YM. We wanted to watch the Test Match but the TV did not work properly. A staff member came and got it working but no channels in English were available. Ever listened to a Cricket commentary in Hindi? There was no further help - the staff did not appear to see that this was not good enough for a 'luxury' room.

There was water all over the bathroom floor. A complaint to the manager brought about a visit from a member of staff who pulled at the water feed to the cold tap and it came away in his hand. This was mid day yet we were still told that it would not be fixed until the following day. Thus no water at the bathroom sink!

The biggest let down was no breakfast is available on the premises. When we questioned this we were told that the thing to do was to go across the road to the stall on the other side, get breakfast (Indian) which they would wrap up, then bring it back and the YM would provide plates and spoons! This place is part of a huge complex of the YM Education Centre with four or five stories of residential rooms and a mass of resident students. Surely they must have a restaurant? If so guests in the Visitors hostel are not allowed to use it.

I would not question the fact that this is a very good back packers hostel and gives value for money as such. But, as you get older, you need a bit more comfort and you will not get it here.

Room Tip: Unless you are really doing it on a budget find somewhere else!

is a very appropriate and indicated place to spend one or two nights in the city. Calm, clean, comfortable, helpful staff and the most is the great price. Excelent value for money. Nice restaurants around

Large clean rooms, comfortable beds, cheap price and helpful staff... We stayed just 1 night while we visited Kovalam and then headed up to Varkala on the bus... would recommend it. We arrived late without a reservation but the staff were helpful and got us fresh bedding. I would recommend phoning ahead and booking as it was locked up with nobody around when we arrived.

The rooms are very spacious, airy and a bargain at their price (single is Rs. 550+tax and around Rs. 850+tax for A/C) considering the location in Tuticorin. It is only 5 minutes from the central train station and around 20-30 minutes from the airport.

The rooms are clean and so are the bedsheets. The towel however had a few stains so I used my own (but in fairness the towel did look thoroughly washed)! However for the price and location it is a very good deal.

This place is comfortable, and a bargain. Room 101 had a lofty, timber ceiling and double doors onto a terrace. The room was enormous and contained a wardrobe; a vanity area; a luggage holder big enough for all your bags; two lounge chairs, with a coffee table between them; a desk and chair; a hard, but comfortable, double bed (which was actually two singles pushed together); plenty of power points, and all kinds of lighting options. A high speed fan blew like the monsoon south westerlies coming in from the Arabian Sea outside, and negated the need for a/c (although the YMCA does offer an a/c option). The big bathroom was spotless, with large sink/shelf area, walk-in shower with hot water (from a geyser), western loo and brisk shower hose. The TV had plenty of English channels, including news and excellent films. All of this, in the centre of town, for 734INR (around £8.50) a night.

Room Tip: We were in 101, with a lovely big terrace. BUT take plenty of mosquito cream, and get the YMCA to supply an anti mosquito plug-in, which they did for us for free.
