I had made a booking at OTH Poovar for a four night stay from Feb 19th to Feb 23rd 2014. The impression I got from talking to Mr Shamir was that getting to the beach was fairly easy. As it so happens, the approach Road is horrible and each time one has to call for an auto or taxi. It cost Rs1200 to go to the poovar beach and come back after an hour. The beach itself does not have lifeguarda and there have been three casualties this season according to the lifeguards at kovalam beach. We had taken two rooms, one for us and one for the children. There were no phones in the rooms and one had to go around the building to get to the adjacent room. Luckily my son had a cell phone so we could communicate. The food is very simple, reasonably tasty. Very little variety for vegetarians like us. We were the only people there and the property itself does not have anything to do in it. It's a small property and when we were there, it was quite dead in the sense that there was really nothing to do except admire the sea view, which is gorgeous. Room service was very slow, taking 30 minutes for one tea and coffee. The TVs were working but most of the channels were not subscribed. Apparently there had been a thunderstorm a few weeks back and not everything had been repaired afterwards. Phones being one of the things not repaired. Wifi was available only in the eating area and not in the rooms. We got so stressed out that we moved out after a day to Hindustan beach resort in Varkala on day 2. The manager Mr Shamir is yet to give back the money he promised to return. We agreed that I would pay half the balance and he would return the rest. It's been more than a week now and I am not hopeful. All the people at OTH are very polite but they were unable to provide the required services for us. Mr Shamir did put us in touch with a different resort, but by then we just wanted to get away to a different place. It definitely is not to be called a resort in that sense. It is a place to stay with limited food available. If you have your own vehicle and don't mind the horrible Road, you could stay there and commute to the beach. For that purpose it is very overpriced. I was quite disappointed to experience it after all the positive tripadvisor reviews. It just did not work out for us.
