“Awesome Experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 30, 2014

Location of the hotel is excellent. If you like forest, this is the place to stay. But remember market is 4km and you can't walk, either a auto or taxi. After 6pm hotel compound gate is closed. But the surrounding is awesome, deep woods, squirrels jumping, monkeys whooping, birds chirping, Periyar river flowing nearby. Food is EXCELLENT. No queue for boat riding, preferential treatment for KTDC guests, jeep safari arranged by hotel.

Only one complain. They should keep security guard in swimming pool. I have seen monkeys drinking water and kids are swimming in it. Totally Unhygienic.

Room Tip: Prefer forest facing room, not garden facing.

This place is very basic. If you are looking for luxury or comfort this is not the place for you. Rooms are very average with cracks in the walls and the bathrooms need some repairs. Everything is really clean but really old and plain. The food is ok, the staff is ok. Keep in mind they lock you in at 6pm so you can't come in and out of this place after that time because its in the wild.

Great location in the park with lots of wildlife around, actually in some cases a bit too much as the monkeys are really obnoxious and will get into the room if windows are not completed locked. Good food, friendly staff. Clean and large rooms.

The location of the place is good. However the rooms are really basic and you cannot open the window or the monkeys could come in. Actually it did happen to one of my friends, even with the window closed, a monkey managed to enter and force the locker. The whole building needs a renovation, cause it look like you're back to 70's.
Food is ok.
No WIFI in the rooms

Disastrous. The rooms are utterly disgusting. The food poorly cooked and the bathrooms are simply hideous. It's only saving graces are the incredible staff on reception and the monkeys outside. Don't waste your money. I wasn't expecting luxury but I was at least expecting a clean bathroom with no pubes on a toilet seat...no such luck.

Since the property is in the Wildlife reserve..it gives you that extra excitement. One of the three properties by govt. (all 3 in the reserve), the hotel is nice but you may get bored if you stay there for more then a day. There are no activities except for t.t. and carom etc. You can go out in the sanctuary with a guide and charges extra. Although, you get confirmed ferry tickets if you stay here. the ferry leaves a few times a day through the lake and reserve. the number of animals you spot is your luck. The night safari being the best chance to spot any (done with one forest official guide). The hotel will arrange everything.
The hotel being inside the reserve you need to come back in the hotel by 6pm and also close your windows at all time (for monkeys may enter your room). You can have a nice view from restaurant with monkeys crowding the pool side area in the morning and playing around.

Staff is good but the food is just ok. Not really to look forward to the next morning as well.

All in all, if you are coming to Thekaddy everyone goes for the ferry ride and you can then have confirmed tickets as per your comfort.

Room Tip: all rooms are same

This is one of those properties that people will either love or hate depending on what they are expecting to find. This is not a 5 star resort that happens to be located inside a nature preserve; rather it is lodging inside a nature preserve that happens to be a pretty decent hotel. So for Americans, it would be comparable to staying in a National Park (and the property is something a little less ambitious than Yellowstone Lodge but nicer than the cabins at Jenny Lake Lodge).

I had a really nice "premium" room on the second floor with access to the balcony, which ended up being a great location for spotting birds and the giant Malabar squirrel. The only down side I saw was that the bed was really hard and I usually like a firm mattress.

I can't really comment on the quality of the food (since there are others who would be in a better position to say whether the food was prepared well) other than to say that it was a buffet and I generally think all food suffers somewhat from being served in a buffet. There were different offerings each of the nights I was there and enough of a selection to satisfy my appetite. At breakfast, the cook made eggs to order which was nice.

Here are a few things I would have like to have known when I was searching for accommodation :

1. At least in late February when I visited, the temperatures were really pleasant so that I didn't miss having air conditioning in the room at all, I opened the window for a short period at night which was alll that was needed to cool off the room. I did not experience any mosquito issues when I visited.

2. Although it is a distance from town (in a mountain location), there was cell phone service (I wasn't sure what to expect).

3. Wifi was available in the lobby for free.

4. When the hotel advises that the gates close at 6pm, they mean not just that the gates to the Preserve close, but that the gates to the perimeter fence around the hotel itself close at 6 pm, so that unless you arrange for a night walk, you really are confined to the hotel and its parking lot from 6 pm to 6:30 am. The tradeoff is that you can be down at the dock at 6:30 am to watch the wildlife emerge from the woods out to the reservoir before any of the boat trip crowds arrive and you can linger by the docks until sunset (which is when I saw elephants bathing down stream and a troop of langur monkeys made their appearance on the dock itself).

5. The staff was very helpful in all respects but particularly in helping us get tickets to the boat ride and then taking us by the hand down to the boats to get us loaded into our seats.

For wanting a "nature" experience, this hotel really delivered.
