Aranya Nivas KTDC
Ranked #13 of 43 Hotels in Thekkady

We two families stayed at the hotel for one night on 26 Mar 13. Right from booking through KTDC web site to check out was a smooth sailing without any hiccups. The hotel has three types of accomodation, deluxe, premium and suite. Except for suite all other rooms are non ac. Rooms are large, tidy and functional. Best part of the hotel is its location. Situated within the Periyar wildlife sanctuary it offers you an experience of stay in the woods. The jetty for boating in the Periyar Lake is close to the hotel and you do not have to run for boating tickets as the hotel gets it for you. Staff is soft spoken and well behaved.
Ovearall our stay in the hotel was comfortable and I shall certainly recommend this to other travellers.

We stayed at the hotel for 2 days/nights. The hotel was neat and clean. Th pool though a bit small is well maintained with good quality water. The breakfast and dinner was sumptuous. We had a very enjoyable trip, the support rendered by the staff of Aranya Nivas was exemplary. The Manager Mr.Pradeep took extra effort to arrange all the outdoor activities such as trekking bamboo rafting etc. This Bamboo rafting and the trekking hosted by the forest department is a very good expereince.

We had a large room enough to accommodate three adults and 1 child. The plan offered was under MAP. The staff was very courteous.

The resort situated inside the forest and guests are advised to reach the resort before 6 pm.

Break fast and Dinner supplement was good. The property is little aged though, but still good.

Room Tip: You can opt for the large rooms with sit out facing lake

I am not sure how this property reached at No 12 on the ratings chart. Its a bad bad property. I reached their with my family only to find out that both agoda and this hotel has messed up with my stay and I had to pay 500 extra for each room that i have booked. After pointless argument where these stupid hotel employees don't help and accept their mistake I decided to pay. I had booked a premium room. The room no doubt is a big room, but has shabby beds, woodwork. I had to call the room service to change the bed sheets as they were smelly and had stains. After having lunch which was lukewarm and not much variety we head to the boat ride which we had booked. Its about 1hr boat ride where we are required to wear those life jackets and not allowed to stand at all. Sorry but really we didn't find this boat trip worth the visit. If you want to see elephants, pigs some birds where you have not seen them in your entire life you would enjoy your trip. In the eve we went down for a walk and thought of visiting the recreational room. It was as expected horrible again. I have seen better rooms in a 1star hotel. Books lying around, cockroaches, smell, torn papers etc. On to the morning breakfast which was just pathetic, no variety, stale food and fruits, their were red ants coming out of the sugar near the coffee/tea. And over this I saw an lizard near the food. As soon as we saw this we just stopped eating and went out. I complained the person incharge over there about this and all she was doing was giving a lame smile. Find attached the lizard pic that I had clicked near the food.
I would just suggest to avoid this one. If by reading other good reviews that were posted here you still want to try this one out then best of luck, hope you are treated well.

Room Tip: Everything is horrible about this hotel

At the end of a long, hazardous journey from Cochin to Thekkady, this really was a sanctuary. This pretty hotel is situated inside the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary at at the edge of the Periyar Lake.It is quiet and though rated as three star only ,it offers more. Our room was very spacious ,with a good sized and comfortable sitting area. The bathroom was also large and contained the all important bathtub. There is a good-sized,well maintained pool though monkeys were a very visible presence during late afternoon. This is good walking territory but most visitors are interested in the wildlife,as the Periyar forest is one of the finest wildlife reserves in India.Dinner and breakfasts consisted of fairly basic, slightly lukewarm buffet food. However we were full of praise for the waiter and chef, who realised that my husband was unwell,so offered him some plain, grilled food. They also produced some freshly brewed coffee for me at breakfast, on request.

Room Tip: Request a view of the forest.

travelled jan 2013, 2nd week with family, booked this place online directly thru KTDC website, the motivation for booking this came from my extensive online research on thekkady, YES they have rightly said everywhere that this is the best property if u wish to really enjoy the jungle, nestled well inside the reserve, the property has an old building look, the big positive is the fact that it isolates u from the tourist spot that thekkady is coz the gates of reserve close by 6 pm and hence u can just sit and enjoy the wilderness from up close and also the fact that this is the only place where in u get reserved boat tickets for the morning boat safari which is the biggest tourist attraction and expect an early morning rush at the boarding jetty if u do not wake up early, if u are not staying here be prepared to stay in a long queue for boat tickets and then another one for boarding the boat...
as far as disappointments go the list is long, from not well maintained rooms, to average washrooms, pathetic room service, poorely facilitated recreation room, unclean swimming pool, tasteless buffet dinner and uncourteous staff... this place reminds u of government offices with best of location but unmantained building and non working staff.. one instance really sums up the experience, at 11 pm i wanted drinking water in the room, no one picked the intercom at reception, room service, guard room and all other numbers mentioned on the intercom, i came out of the room went to reception... no person sitting, went to dining area and kitchen.. no one there as well, went to guard room.. no human traceable.. just wandered thru the resort and cldnt find anystaff, went outside no one there as well around 50 meter far saw the lights of a room open .. walked over there they call it tv room three staff sitting idle over there, when asked said we close room service by 10 pm and as the gates of reserve close by 6 pm hence no staff is required to sit at reception... this was for search of water, god forbid if some one has an emergency, well the staff are not supposed to attend to that..
travellers have to decide whether the one big positive really outweighs the list of negatives.....

Room Tip: front rooms have monkey trouble but are other wise with good jungle view

This KTDC property is what all tourism properties are. Spacious reception, huge bathrooms and premium location. No private players are allowed to have properties within the sanctuary, so that's what gives Aranya Niwas it's unique feature. However the rooms were not that satisfactory when you compare them to the price you pay. The food buffet was the same everyday and was very boring.
