We stayed for 5 nights at this beautiful location. We really enjoyed it bcause of the sounds of the jungle and the closeness of the wilderness. However it is 4 km from Kumily town and every time you leave the hotel to go on any trip you have to pay an entrance to he park of 200 or 300 ruppes per person sorry that should be foriegner. This includes the trips on the boat or nature walks within the park. This looses any financial advantage to the traveller and is an irritation when you are staying for more than 2 days.

This is not made clear in any available literature or website. Please can some pass be given to guests. With some TLC it could be marvellous! Kitchen very clean and food really good.

Room Tip: There is only one a/c but that didn't worry us.

We spent 2 nights here. I guess 30 years or so ago it was very smart but needs a little TLC. Handy for the early morning boat trip, but you can`t go out at night. There was a very strong curry smell everywhere, especially the "Beer parlour". Very hard mattresses. Pleasant staff. pool area was rather grubby. More information about booking treks and park activities would have been helpful.

Room Tip: We were above the restaurant, hence constant smell.

This hotel is good in parts and for a three star hotel somewhat isolated from the main village in the Periyar national park it does a passable job. The fabric of the hotel is quite delightful really in an old colonial building and we had a rather grand room with private veranda. It is also situated quite near the landing stage for the boats and pleasant enough 4km walk to Kumily village, or there are plenty of tuk tuks close by if needed. So far so good. One problem is that the park is locked each night at 1800 so you are stuck here for dinner and other diversions, being locked into the hotel grounds at night. For food, the obvious choice of the buffet is not that great. It has a limited choice of Indian food and the quality isn't that great. Think second rate take-away crossed with school dinners. There is the option of the a la carte menu for other tastes and a better choice of local food...Or so the staff in reception will tell you... And the menu prominently displayed in the rooms will tell you. Don't believe them The restaurant decides one or the other depending, so we were told, on how many people are staying on any particular night. Then the menu in the room will tell you breakfast starts at 7am - again its is a fiction- although the Indian breakfast on the buffet is OK when it eventually turns up. Prices are a little high - 200 Rs for a bottle of Kingfisher (MRP 65Rs) for the area but then you are out in the middle of a reserve with no other choice. . Like many places in India it is spoiled by poor maintenance in the bathroom and the room did smell a little musty at first. You can get internet access for 100Rs an hour in the cyber café, not too bad but it can be had for 20Rs in town. You would be better off staying in the nearby Kumily village.

A group of us , 13 in all were on a cycling expedition in Kerala .We covered Munnar, Thekkady , Varkala , Kovalam and Kanyakumari . Our stay at Ananya Nivas,Thekkady was just right for us .The rooms were spacious , neat and clean .The staff helpful and the General Manager Pradeep took pains to see that we were comfortable and well taken care off.He helped us to experience the night safari and the next morning the Boating on Periyar River.
The Bar was a nice place to relax and the buffets at breakfast and dinner was more than adequate.
We would like to thank Pradeep and his team for the very enjoyable stay .

We stayed one night in this hotel. It is not easy to judge it but I think you will be restricted as after 6 pm you will be in the jungle in hotel boundary. We had an experience and like to share it. We discovered 2 lizards behind the small fridge in room and although the manager sent a pest control person to catch them, the lizards somehow escaped and they needed to remove the dirty fridge from room. The guy spent half an hour to look for the lizards but to no avail and I had not a straight-forward sleep.

At the beginning of our stay, they did not give us a key to our room and although we kept asking for the key it became clear that it was missing and after a heated discussion they gave us a backup key!!

The food is not as good as the other KTDC hotels and I can say it was the worst - may be because it is in jungle !!

We spent two nights at the Aranya Nivas so that we could spend a whole day in the Periyar Tiger Reserve/Wildlife Sanctuary. It's an impressive building, constructed on the model of an English country lodge. Our room was beautiful and spacious. Elegant wood floor, with furniture and fixtures that were retro in an appealing sort of way. Another room -- suite 101 -- to which they offered to switch us in response to a couple of fairly minor complaints (see below), was even more impressive, with panoramic forest and lake views. The breakfast, lunch, and dinner (all buffet style) were quite good as long as you like South Indian food, and the food prices were reasonable. Although a couple of the staff members obviously considered themselves executive material, most of the staff were courteous, industrious, and extremely helpful.

The hotel needs to work, however, on a few problems. On the first night of our stay, the water in the sink and shower started coming out very brown. We reported it to the person in charge -- one of the aforementioned executive-material types -- who responded nonchalantly that they'd done some work on the pipes so the brown water was only to be expected and would right itself in time. (It was still brown in the morning but OK by midday.) We also ran out of hot water once, apparently because a lot of people in the hotel had just taken their showers. Another problem is that internet access is available only in a "cybercafe" that consists of one desk with a computer at 130 rupees per hour. There wasn't too much competition for the lone computer during our stay, but Aranya Nivas is not inexpensive and our experience with comparable hotels in India is that they now generally provide wireless access in the rooms. Finally, the hotel strongly advises you not to open your windows because monkeys will enter the room. The rooms are not air-conditioned (except suite 101) so this could be a problem in the summertime.

As some reviewers have observed, you can't leave or enter the reserve after 6 p.m. Since Aranya Nivas is inside the reserve, there's not much to do in the evenings. This was not a problem for us, since we wanted to rest and get up early for the jungle walk. If the Kathakali dances, martial arts performances, and ayurvedic massages that are available in Thekkady town are important to you, then perhaps you should not stay in the Aranya Nivas or in either of the other two hotels inside the reserve (Lake Palace and Periyar Lodge). But it appears to be a lot easier to get boat and jungle tour tickets if you're staying at one of these three hotels than if you are staying outside. You still have to go to a ticket window, but the hotel prearranges the transaction and you go to a different window with a far shorter line than the one for general admission. If your reason for being in Thekkady is to see the reserve, then there are a lot of advantages to Aranya Nivas and its two sister hotels.

Room Tip: Pay a few dollars extra and get suite 101 if it's available.

We stayed in this Hotel for three nights. I had mixed feelings about this property. The Hotel itself is quite good, clean and well maintained. It is located inside the Periyar Sanctuary and this restricts your movements somehow since you need to be inside the Hotel by 6 P. M. However, will never forget of scene of early morning when we were waked up by the sound of birds.
Room was good clean and spacious with basic amenities. Bathroom was also clean.
Staff is very co-operative our request for booking the boat ride in Lake Periyar was done by the reception before we checked in & therefore we did not waste time having to wait in the long lines below. Boat trip itself was good but you need to be lucky spotting animals.

The food which was O.K. Nothing so special.
All in all a good stay at the Hotel. I would recommend this Hotel to everyone who loves to be in the middle of nature and is looking for a quiet and clean place.
