This was a revisit after two years to Aranya Nivas on a birdwatching holiday and little has changed for either the better or the worse. Accomodation is clean and comfortable albeit a little worn at the edges. Service is friendly and efficient.

As with many state owned enterprises the operation falls down a little on the quality of the food being served and the standards of organisation.

There is nothing wrong with the food with plenty available and it being generally wholesome. On the other hand there is nothing about it to get the visitor excited either - simply plain fare. Organisation at these establishments is often a little shambolic, having a bureaucratic structure rather than one aimed at customer service. This certainly frays at the edges from time to time.

The position is of course excellent for access to the Periyar reserve and was our main reason for visiting once again. Overall I would recommend a visit.

The rooms are large but most rooms do not have double beds. There is no a/c in the room. The bathroom and toilet was clean but basic.

Given that its in the wildlife park, I expected a lot more from the location. We saw no elephants or tigers. We saw deer and some monkeys on a 1 hour boat cruise in the lake. Entrance into the park is a con.

Although we were staying at the hotel which is inside the park we had to pay a foreigner entrance fee of 400 to enter the park. How else were we supposed to get to the hotel. Worse still we left the hotel to go to a spice farm the following day and had to exit the park. Returning to our hotel to collect our luggage we had to pay another 400 each to enter.

It was a very disappointing place to stay. I would not recommend it given the price is 5525 a night, including taxes. We paid the same sort of price for a 4 star hotel elsewhere and Aranya Nivas is not even a 3 star hotel. KTDC (Kerala Tourism Development Corporation) has not come up trumps this time.

This is a great hotel. The room we had was huge, spotless and the staff very attentive and friendly and the food was excellent. The water was a little erratic which made for an interesting shower.

I asked if there was anywhere I could make a phone call and I was taken to a phone at the back of a room where everyone was watching TV. I sat down to wait my turn and instatntly made a dozen friends who told me to go to the front of the queue! Lovely people.

The position of this hotel is fantastic and it is really quiet apart from the noise of wildlife. Lovely to sit at breakfast and hear the birds and watch the baboons outside.

Higly recommend this hotel.
