Beautiful Hotel with Sustainability written in capital letters. The compound is very lovely taken care off with lots off local trees. The staff is marvelous and I had the best sleep in all India. At all times you can hear the birds and animals sing!

We visited Spice Village last year just at the onset of the monsoon and I am writing this review from my notes. The place is a longish drive from Cochin airport (about 5 - 5:30 hours) and just after the flight into Cochin can be a bit tiring. However, once you reach the hotel it becomes clear that it is worth it. The staff greets you with an organic drink while you check in and you start feeling one with nature (with the conveniences of modern day life). We had booked two different types of cottages and both the categories were very comfortable. The spice garden cottages were the larger of the two and had traditional furniture with a neat sit out. There are neat little paths going up to each cottage.
The whole premises is covered with trees of various spices and fruits - we picked up a number of varieties of mango's which had just fallen down - In fact, while we were there a few times we had ripe mangos dropping off trees around us.
The bar has been created by converting the old bungalow of the forest ranger in British times. The walls of the bar are covered with photographs which paint out the history of the place. The bartender who was from a nearby village filled us in with details on the construction of the dam and local current events. It is worth spending some time here. The food at Spice Village is very good with a lot of choice at the buffet and a lot of Kerala in the cuisine - the chefs even help with recipes if you are so inclined. There are a lot of activities held on the premises - a video film, classes, books so plenty to do. The staff is very warm and courteous.
The hotel belongs to the environmentally conscious CGH Earth group of hotels and their concern is reflected in many things throughout the hotels they own. If you walk around the place you come across the solar arrays, the bio gas plant and the compost heap tucked away on the outskirts of the premises.
Would gladly visit again sometime.

Stayed at the Spice Village for three days from 16th to 18th. The resort is tucked away nicely off the main road from Kumily to Kottayam. The property spread over 8 acres is a horticultural garden of sorts. It has thousands of trees carefully nurtured and maintained of over 100 varieties. It’s a treasure trove for the horticulturally inclined.

All the cottages inside are done up beautifully and very elegantly. The intense efforts made by the management to ensure that each and every cottage is fitted out to the best , is easily discernable. Although there is no television in any cottage, we found it so useful that we were able to switch off from the outside world, albeit for just two days. The lack of a TV and poor connectivity of mobile services, actually proved a boon to my family as we were able to spend quality time without these hindrances together.

The property has many interesting places within it. Mr Woods house, the old Forest Ranger, has been converted into a modern bar filled with old pictures and relics. My boys of the modern age were quite wonder struck with the pictures and the items displayed there. There is a wild life room , filled with pictures of wild animals, collected over many years, and pug marks of tigers, in POP molds. A video show is organized every day that introduces guests to the wildlife at the Periyar sanctuary. There is a organic garden that caters for all fruits and vegetables that are used in the kitchen. The resort manufactures its own paper too, and they provide a guided tour of all their facilities daily. Everything in the property is aimed at being natural or as close to nature as possible. The Vermicompost shed provides the manure for the trees and the Sewage disposal Plant ensures that water is recycled. To cut a long story short, the entire village is merged with nature and natural things.

One thing that stood out in the entire trip was the attitude of the resort staff. I have been to many places, but the dedication and warmth shown by the staff at the Spice Village is outstanding. In my entire duration there, I have not felt even once that I was not being looked after. The staff are very polite and genuinely warm in their interaction. Whether it was Manu, our ever jovial chef who taught us cooking of one veg and one non veg dish or Ajit or the other staff at the restaurant, who looked after our food needs, I have never come across such nice people. I was surprised to find that everyone took criticism constructively and attempted to correct it, not wish it away.

The swimming pool is filled with fresh non chemical water and it actually gives a feeling of swimming in mineral water. Clean and clear! The restaurant serves a variety of dishes. A couple of dishes to cater for Jains and North Indian travellers would be welcome. There were a couple of them whom we met who felt that the repertoire of food in the North Indian cuisine could have been better. The Kerala cuisines cooked by the chefs were out of the world.

Overall, this stay at the Spice Village has been one of the most memorable we have had in many days. The entire available staff was there to see us off when we departed, quite a change to all other places where they only welcome you. This was such a pleasant change, we felt so nice. I strongly recommend the Spice Village to those who yearn for a break from the grind without the nuisance of the idiot box or mobile phones and just wholesome uninterrupted valuable time with the family.

Room Tip: Try and stay in the cottage where Sir Paul McCartney stayed. My brother in the US got envious of my...

We stayed 2 nights at Spice Village last week. What a wonderful property and true to what the Hotel Claims - we had a very organic experience. Everything is serene and close to Earth. right from the Pen made of paper to the rustic yet very clean Interiors. Food was good though service was very slow.

The only negatives I felt was that we stayed too short. One should plan a week only at Spice Village and detox your mind :)

Wonderful stay, great people!

We are going to Thekkady after more than 20 years. A lot of resorts and hotels have come up close to each other and the town is busy all day and night. Thekkady town now resembles a busy street of a Metro. In the midst of all this is “Spice village” close to the Periyar Tiger Reserve.

On our arrival we were welcomed CGH Earth style. The entire resort is well planned with a lot of greenery. The cottages are spread out all over the property and directions given so that you can go around without losing your way. The cottage was spacious, clean and neat with a beautiful view of the garden around. Food was very good and tasty. The lunch was Ala Carte but dinner and breakfast was buffet with live counters.

The staff were very courteous and helpful. They were only too happy to bake a surprise birthday cake for my son and all staff stood around and wished him as he cut the cake.

There are over hundred different varieties of plants and trees with the names displayed. The trees are either flower or fruit bearing and hence attract a lot of different types of birds and animals. We were really lucky to see a troop of Nilgiri Langur and a Malabar giant squirrel at a very close range within the property. They seem to be regular visitors here and hence not concerned about people being so close.

There are a lot of activities for both children and adults which can keep you occupied all through the day. There is a well maintained swimming pool, badminton and basketball courts, cooking classes, bird watching, spice walk, evening entertainment, the tiger club where the naturalist will guide you about the wild life in and around and lots more. Aside from the activities organised within the resort there are a lot of activities like boat ride in the Periyar River, elephant ride, trekking, etc. All this is done by either the forest department or private agencies. Details are available at the resort. You need atleast three days to make use of all the activities both in and outside the resort.

After a two day stay, it was hard to leave this place but then we were looking forward to our next destination “Spice Coast Cruises” of CGH Earth.

I visited this property during a recent recce for Riviera Travel for a new tour starting in October and found it amazing, the villas are lovely well appointed clean and in a spectacular location. The resort offers so much from a great cookery demonstration, local dancing, wildlife walk (too many leaches this time of year. ) ELephant rides, paper making, visit to Spice plantation, the list is endless the hospitality amazing and the food wonderful, if you play sport then why not try your luck against Mr Francis the resident sports organiser i lost both snooker and table tennis. Next time tennis. He is such a gentleman and great sport. Thanks if you visit Southern india include this on your list! I am really looking forward to returning later this year!

Room Tip: All rooms are nice ask for a detached one but really all are wonderful

The lovely individual cottages with thatched roofs are large, very comfortable and extremely clean.
Set out like a village in beautifully kept gardens with a great pool. Very good breakfast choices with an interactive kitchen as well. Plenty of entertainment for the guests as well, such as traditional dance, cooking demonstrations, etc. Lovely indoor/outdoor restaurant serving a variety of local and western cuisine. Everything we ate was delicious. All the staff members were very friendly and helpful with good local knowledge. Jomet and head chef were particularly helpful in our searches for cooking equipment and local cooking books. We enjoyed a very relaxing stay and thank you to all staff.
