“Good accommodation and service, poor value and quality food/drink”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 4, 2013 via mobile

We stayed for 3 days just prior to Christmas. The standard of accommodation was very good (our room had no air-con but none was needed at this time of year and at a slightly higher and cooler altitude). The staff were very friendly and we received good service. Sadly, we didn't think much of the food. The buffet was very plain and pandering to European tastes rather than offering many quality local dishes. Especially disappointing when the cost was 5 times that of what you'd pay in one of the local restaurants. Things to do: we recommend the full day 'border hike' in the forest on the hills in the Periyar game reserve and riding the elephants at Elephant Junction (go for the 2 hour option but take a change of dry clothes). We had a fabulous vegetable masala at the Pepper Garden (prepare to wait as it is freshly prepared).

Luxurious rooms in an enchanting resort. It offers lots of interesting activities such as cooking demonstrations and traditional dancing shows. The food in the restaurant is good. They think about the small details, the smell of the rooms and the gardens, the eco-friendly room amenities, and mosquito management.

After another long drive along the crazy road network in India, this place is such a welcome respite which has a lovely air of tranquility about it. We received a very personable welcome by being offered a a seat in the garden where the manager came out to check us in and show us to our little thatched cottage.

Highly recommend are the Ajuvedic massage treatments offered by the hotel spa. On the journey up, our driver was keen for us to go to one of the many places in town (baksheesh for him of course). After an 8 hour drive and a banging headache, all we wanted to do was flop and so elected to pay a little more for the hotel spa instead. Well worth it and like no other treatment I've experienced! As a man, the treatment was from two (male) masseurs for me. My wife had hers with two (female) masseuses, as is the tradition. The 90 minute treatment started with me sitting on a small wooden stool and being pummelled by two burly guys, so vigorously in fact that the stool was sliding up and down the floor. After more treatment on the couch I was placed into a kind of wooden cupboard with my head sticking out of the top and the steam turned on. Then scrub down in the shower and no room for modesty here!

We ate outside in the garden and I recall a menu selected only from produce that was sourced locally. It was a lovely touch to receive a cake at the end of our meal to celebrate our honeymoon, including candles that we had to blow out just like on our birthday.

I would also recommend the elephant sanctuary locally that the hotel can arrange. If you go, pay the extra to help bathe the elephants as well as take a ride. Wear clothes that you don't mind getting a bit wet and wade into the giant bathtub with them and get scrubbing with the mahouts, terrific fun! A thousand photo opportunities so take the camera and plenty of memory card space.

We loved the pool (though it was a bit cool in December) and the hotel ambience. Wonderful welcome. Buffet dinner and lovely breakfast. Touches of fresh flowers in the room were appreciated.

The only one issue was the towel changing policy ( this is the same the world over) . We hang up our towels to indicate that they don't need changing and we get new ones. We complain to reception and more clean towels emerge. This always happens, short of hiding the towels I don't know what to advise. A bit poor for an Eco hotel thOugh.

Room Tip: I suspect all the rooms are very wonderful.

We really loved this hotel and had one of the amazing experience of our kerala trip, the arrival welcome was very good and had a local touch to it…the room or cottages are very nice and had all the basic amenities in them. The food is also good and has a local Indian touch to it.The spa is good and we had a very good ayurvedic massage experience. The Bar is good and gives you a feeling of old nostalgia.

It's a beautiful place but I feel it's a bit overpriced. The room facilities here are basic ( NO A/C or TV). The service is very good and staff is very courteous and helpful.
The buffet in restaurant is quite expensive and the food is not as per the taste of an average Indian ( Food is not spicy at all).
