The place is a forest with huge trees through which you can walk around and play Jungle Book's Mowgli. Some birds can be seen with luck but monkeys are at ease out there (although need to be careful). There's a big lake out there for which the tickets are 'not available in advance' and may need to shell big money if coming late.
Take time to relax if you have

There are cute little monkeys all around just don't feed them. They hang out near humans like we are invisible. It is a good place to visit since the money they collect from fares are supposed to protect the wildlife of Periyar. People are very friendly.

Had a wonderful day walking through the park. and then rafting on the lake. No elephants to be seen as it was wet season.. did see some evidence of their existence..
Saw a few birds and Bison.. a very pleasant day.. shared with good company.. the guides were very knowlegable

Too many noisy tourists, I think the animals have run away a long time ago. There were just too many people and they were of the package tourist variety, no sense of why they were there in the first place.
