“SCAM!! Check your bill carefully”

We stayed here during our Honeymoon trip on September 2010. The hotel is average but I understand there is not much choice in this area. It is damp and they are a bit pretentious considering the facilities and services offered BUT the worse part is that they tried the worst trick on us. On the evening before departure we were offered a shandy (beer and sprite) , we were trying the internet conection at the lobby (terrible signal and service BTW) before dinner so we took it. Afterwards when we received the bill for dinner I noticed there were 2 Chef's Special valued at 22$ (11$ each) when we complained about that charge (thinking it was a course we hadn't eaten) we were told it was the beer cocktail!!!!!!!
The most expensive beer I have ever had....not even NY, London, Sweden....
Considering that in Spain a shandy goes for $3 in the most expensive place I can certainly say this is the biggest rip off ever.
Otherwise the food was sligthly pricier than in other places in India, in fact, lunch and dinner for two people was the same cost as the beer cocktail.

I read so many reviews of all the hotels we planned to stay at in Kerala, but no-one mentioned the unbearable noise from nearby temples. They blast out religious music or chanting, over loudspeakers, so that it covers the entire area. This started at 5.30am one day (yes - 5.30am!) and continued on and off all day. It was unbearable. There was no escape - even in our room it woke us up and tormented us all day.

The hotel itself was okay. Very pretty, and would probably be delightful in good weather, but it rained the whole time we were there. The room felt very damp. Food and staff were nice.

We encountered the religious music problem at a few hotels in Kerala - if you plan to travel there - bear that in mind!

There is little wrong with the place as long as you don't mind being ouside the town which we didn't. The rooms are fine, though I am not sure that they need fumigating every evening to such an extent. The food was variable in quality, sometimes very good but occasionally poor. Over-attentive staff become a pain after a while. The setting is fabulous though. Beware of excessive charges if asking the hotel to organise taxis.

I booked Shalimar Spice after looking at the pictures on their website but wasn't sure what to expect. Must say, the pics they have put up do not do any justice to what awaits when you reach there.

Cross the wooden bridge and a verdant green world, with lush vegetation all around, pebbled pathways and a stream flowing right through, awaits you - you could very well be deep inside a spice plantation or even the Periyar Tiger Reserve (which is quite close by). The rooms were elegant and tastefully done up, along with very nice bathrooms. The honeymoon cottage was superbly located, right next to the stream, though unfortunately we could not stay in it since it was unavailable during our stay. The pool is small, but very nice and the staff was very helpful to wait around while we got back from the town well into the evening just so we could have a dip. The food was quite good as well, and the juices served with breakfast were garden fresh. It was raining during a lot of our time here, but unlike most resorts where it would have been irritating, it somehow added to the overall ambience.

Overall, definitely recommended especially if you are on a nice, romantic holiday.

PS: Try the Apple Toddy.

what a great place. the rooms were absolutely fantastic - we stayed in an elegant cottage and it was beautiful. the food in their restaurant was outstanding. the service staff were extremely accommodating and very informative in the local activities and helping to make tour bookings. would highly recommend. located a 10min tuktuk ride away from the gate of Periyar national park.

Amongst the plantations and tall trees are hidden very elegant comfortable cottages keeping the basic essence of Kerala alive. Unlike "hotel" there is a personal touch in everything like a special candle light dinner arranged for our anniversary with complimentary wine. The staff is very friendly and food is excellent. The small things like bathroom slippers, hair dryer, electric kettle and fan are all provided keeping your needs in mind. Recommend it for those who like quiet, peaceful time...
