5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 16, 2013

spent a couple of nights at Shalimar and it was a truly wonderful experience. perfect place to relax in a quiet location, close to some great trekking and landscapes in Thekkady. Beautiful property with great spa facilities, wonderful restaurant and very clean and delightful cottages. would recommend to those looking for a relaxing place to stay, quiet, clean, beautiful and especially recommend the spa and restaurant.

Simply amazing property- excellent staff, food, ambiance, landscaping....... You're transported into the jungles right from their entrance gate.
Makes you forget the little bit of a mess that is the approach road to the property - they more than make up for it.
Excellent cottages, toilets, restaurant. Loved the little sunken area they have with the fireplace - ideal to chill out & relax either before or after meals. The abundance of nature and their very own spice garden (which the staff is courteous enough to provide a tour of) adds to the feeling of being in the lap of nature.
The little walk ways, swings, benches, seating areas are very well stationed and spaced out to give you privacy.
Was very impressed with the maintenance and cleanliness throughout the property and in the 1 instance that we did need extra asistance- it was offered promptly and efficiently.

Kerala deserves the "God's Own Country" title.

Perfection might be an understatement for Shalimar Spice Garden Resort, Thekkady. I along with my family stayed in the resort for 2 nights in our 6 day tour to Kerala. Although while approaching the property, we had to cross our fingers, but the very moment we got of our vehicle at the entrance, we were mesmerized by the beauty and the ambience of the place. Beautifully located amidst a small spice plantation, the resort will successfully refresh you of any tiredness and help you rejuvenate your soul. The staff is absolutely fantastic bunch of people who are always ready to help for anything in their control. They took so much care of my 83 year grandmother and even upgraded and shifted us to a cottage so that she doesn't have to climb stairs. Food was too good. In short , a perfect destination and a perfect place to stay for anyone visiting Thekkady. I would certainly recommend the hotel admin to keep the pool open for a longer time (early morning to late night) and plan some more activities. Elderly and invalid people might have difficulty approaching the resort because of the terrain.

Room Tip: Elegant Rooms are best for families. Cottages for Couples.

We are just leaving the spice garden after two outstanding days with our three children. The cottage rooms are extremely clean, spacious and tastefully decorated. We loved the tour of the gardens and kitchen herb and spice patches. They even have a fish pond and we had wonderful fish in the evenings. The breakfasts, snacks and meals were absolutely delicious and served by extremely polite and smiling staff. Our bathrooms were modern and the complimentary shampoo etc smelled great. We took the rafting and walking tour into the nature reserve which we all enjoyed and the hotel booked the tour and driver. Thank you to everyone at the Shalimar for a most enjoyable stay!

Room Tip: All rooms seemed great!

The setting of this accommodation was lovely - with the spice trees around and the feeling of peace and tranquility. Unfortunately, it was very wet and we were therefore limited in not being able to use the swimming pool and being out of town it would have required a tuk tuk or other transport to get out. The cottages are very nice and clean, although the bathroom is a bit small and there was nowhere to put one's wash bags. The bed was very comfortable. Unfortunately, on our first morning we were woken up by loud voices outside at 5.30 am. Although we reported this and were told it would be investigated, it happened again on the second morning; we were then told they were new security staff members.

The food in the restaurant was quite good. We ate all our meals there as to go out was too much of an effort, but found the menu a bit uninspiring. Service was generally slow, but on our second day I had to wait 45 minutes for my lunch, which is unacceptable. The rest of the family received their meals at different times too. There was only one other family, so I am at a loss to understand why the service was so slow and erratic.

We had massages, which were reasonably priced, although we were slightly disconcerted to be expected to strip naked, with no regard to personal modesty!

One positive thing I would like to emphasise, though, is that we asked to have extremely muddy boots and trainers cleaned following our early morning (very wet) walk in Periyar. This was done speedily and exceptionally well and we were very grateful.

Room Tip: It's probably quieter towards the back of the garden, although you would have to climb a number...

We had a fantastic stay at this property. The accommodation was cosy and beautifully designed and should you wish there are plenty of opportunities to take guided tours of the grounds and attached vegetable gardens. Much of the food served in the restaurant was locally grown. Who knew there was so much you could do with beetroot? Overall the food was excellent and varied and the homemade pickles were especially good.

Staff were incredibly friendly and solicitous to the extent of putting hot water bottles in the beds on particularly chilly nights. I loved the range of toiletries, the stunning gardens and the chance to enjoy the Kerala monsoon in such lovely surroundings.

From check in to check out the experience was flawless, I would highly recommend this property at any time of year.

This is one of the best resorts I have stayed at. When we arrived at the resort it looked like we were going to be disappointed but we were lost for words. Our van was too big to pass on the road, so we had to walk. But, they do provide a vehicle to take you out to the road and back.
We had a great time here. Very friendly staff and food was also very good. The time we visited it was raining and the climate was perfect. We were the only ones in the resort and we loved the service they provided. Their was 11 of us. Even our kids enjoyed it.
We could see all the spices inside the resort, they smelt very good when it was raining. We went in the rainy season. They gave us a tour of the property and explained what each spice was.
They took good care of us. They had free wi-fi.

Room Tip: Try and get it near the reception. You will have to walk up and down a lot. But most rooms are tow...
