We arrived at the Shalimar after a very long windy journey from Munnar, consequently it took a while to appreciate it fully! The bridge into the hotel was stunning .. amazing scenery in a not particularly attractive area. With flowers, birds, butterflies and greenery everywhere. Our room was cool and quite dark with views of the grounds. A lovely touch was a very comfortable rocking chair, ample tea and coffee and dressing gowns provided. It was a pleasure to wander around the almost deserted grounds exploring quiet areas and even sitting on a swing. The swimming pool looked attractive but was very cold! There was a fairly extensive menu and service was definitely with a smile .. the young man who served us was charming. Contrary to a previous comment beer was available and was a good price. We were able to contact home with free wi fi and the lounge area was tastefully furnished and empty. Breakfast was delicious and overall our stay of two nights was a definite success. Thank you.

If you want to hide, disconnect and rest... this is the place! though quite far from any attractions, you can here have a complete relax: rooms do not have television, nor A/C or fridge (no need, as temperature is cool enough for water and beer is not permitted - muslim neighbourhood!!) and you have a small but nice swimmingpool to refresh yourself! Staff is attentive and food really good.

After a lengthy, visual feast of a journey around hairpin bends and an unusual "blessing" of a thunderstorm which broke the searing pre-monsoon heat, we were very pleased to arrive safely at Shalimar - a small, tranquil refuge in the Thekkady Hills. To be frank, we expected a larger spice plantation estate type set-up, with more widely spaced accommodation, so it was a surprise to see that the property is a splice of spice snatched from the surrounding rambling estates but no less authentic, or comfortable. Despite the number of activities on offer we never left the property, preferring to imbibe the tranquility and coolness of the greenness and lounge at the peaceful, modest sized pool listening to the birds. Do the short stroll with Shirley around the property where she will happily point out the plants, fruit, nut and spice trees. The accommodation is comfortable (no AC) and bedrooms and bathrooms are clean and perfectly adequate, all with comfy sit-outs looking into the adjacent cardamom plantation and forest. The food is healthy, home cooked fare and has a variety of choice from local Keralan Indian to western (the fish was a little fishy). The dining ambiance, especially the outdoor, could be improved and local musicians could be hired for the enjoyment of the guests who have travelled far to be here. Know that this is an Indian owned and run property, and service, whilst truly friendly, can be haphazard and a little slow. Ultimately, if you have the time to spare, Shalimar is a good value, tranquil break from the heat of the coast and steamy backwaters. However if you are looking for true nature experiences do not bet on this to fulfill your needs.

Room Tip: Ask for the larger double cottages at the entrance up the stairs to the pool or the characterful hon...

We looked long and hard at hotels around Thekkady and were very glad we ended up choosing the Shalimar. The rooms were modern, spacious and comfortable and, at least the ones we stayed in, tastefully decorated. Reception and lobby area also stylish and clearly decorated by someone who "gets it". Food at breakfast and dinner was very good and staff friendly and helpful. The hotel is a little out of town (which is not where you would want to stay anyway I don't think) and down a bumpy road. But fairly easy to get in and out of and only a cheap tuk tuk ride to anywhere you might want to go. The hotel grounds were green and peaceful. Pool small but adequate. Massage and other spa treatments also very good. Our package included breakfast and dinner and considering the quality of the resort and rooms we thought it was very good value.

Room Tip: We booked 3 deluxe rooms. One room was "up-graded" to the honeymoon suite which was down i...

Shalimar is the perfect place to relax and unwind. My husband and I stayed here for two nights as part as a package and barely left the site! Having come from a sizzling beach resort, it was nice to experience the cooler mountain air. We loved how green everything was and how much nature was close by. It's also in a great location if you want to stock up on tea and spices with many factory outlets within a half-hour drive.

The cottages were peaceful and secluded and we made good use of the pool and Ayurvedic centre (prices were very reasonable). The staff couldn't do enough to help us either and the food was fab. We also appreciated the free wifi.

There are a couple of good 45min round walks from Shalimar that let you see some of the local area and plenty of local children nearby who will be thrilled to meet you and practise their English. Watch out for Thomas who lives at the end of the road and collects coins - he's a sweetheart!

The only thing we weren't so keen on was the long drive to the resort - it's up in the mountains and only accessible by lots of windy roads which made my husband very car sick. This can't really be avoided though - just make sure you take a few deep breaths on the way up!!

Don't give up, keep going! The small, very bumpy road to Shalimar Spice Garden is a challenge well worth it. You will be rewarded with a beautiful, well kept and maintained property settled in a lush garden of beautiful flowers, trees and spices.
The restaurant offers indoor and outdoor seating and is tastefully decorated.
The food was divine and the staff was very helpful and friendly.
The cottages were simply beautiful, clean and stylish.
In the garden you find a small pool with sun loungers and hammocks to relax during the day and an open but covered area for little get togethers in the evenings.
Wish we could have stayed longer.

Nature lovers will love this place! The setting is a tropical paradise, a few miles from the town. It is so relaxing and quiet that all you hear is the sounds of the birds. The flowers and decorations are gorgeous and the hospitality by Shirley and the rest of the staff is exceptional. The food was excellent, the rooms were beautiful, clean and comfortable. This place is worthy of a honeymoon. You can't get much more romantic than this.

Room Tip: They even have a pool and everything is kept spotlessly clean!
