“Quite an adventure..”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 26, 2013

We got up at 5:00am for an hour jeep ride in residual monsoon rains (it cleared up later) with a chai stop on the way. On the drive into the sanctuary saw a few elephants and one bison. We then did a 3.5 hour trek into the jungle with a native guide (SriLankan refugees settled in there) and had a great time (even saw tiger footprints). Great views but lots of leeches (right after monsoon). Had one leech bite (yuk but not dangerous just a little blood). In the preserve saw one snake and one big chameleon. Also a short boat ride to a waterfall. On the way back we saw lots of elephants (some with tusks), sambar (deer), Malabar spoonbill, giant squirrels, etc. A very full day but totally worthwhile even if a little outside our comfort zone (mostly the leeches).

“Nature walk in the wild”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 21, 2013

The nature walk experience was good albeit not too many animals could be spotted. The views were amazing and we could spot some birds and interesting flaura. The entire 2 hours walk was a refreshing activity.

“Thekkady Review”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 18, 2013

Before i get into the specifics of my experience in Thekkady, let me first tell you how this place came into existence. I came across this shabby raconteur who told me this interesting story.
Thekaddy was once part of Akbar's empire and was originally called Thale-is-lamia. Akbar once pissed on Birbal's over-intelligence wanted to teach him a lesson. So he called him up and said that he wanted to name this place as Thekaddy. He then asked Birbal to spell it out for him. T-H-E-K-A-D-Y, Birbal replied. Akbar smiled and said that's wrong. Birbal was stunned. His spelling skills were known throughout the Mughal Sultanate. After all he was the one who first spelled 'Schizophrenia' correctly. So he replied with pride: That's not true. Thekady got to be T-H-E-K-A-D-Y. Akbar replied with a smug on his face: "It's T-H-E-"Double K"-D-Y. Birbal was stunned once again. There cant be two Ks. That's completely wrong he replied (with utmost anguish). Akbar stared at him in fury and replied : "The KKing is always right!". Ever since Thale-is-lamia is known as Thekkady.
Ok! Ok! i have no freaking idea why there are two Ks in Thekkady and I dont think there are any stories around it either. But I do know that it is one hell of an interesting place :) :D

# days : 2-3 days
Things to do : Jungle scout, Border trekking, Tent stay
Things not to do:
1) Donot book an accomodation here. Instead stay in a tent or a bamboo house which costs around 4k for two people
2) Tribal dance is a definite No No.

“bamboo rafting and walk, full day”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 2, 2013

I advise this, rather than the boat trip which is crowded and makes one queue twice to obtain a ticket and a place on the boat. The day trip is not terribly exciting but it is a nice nature walk and a nice trip around the lake. Lunch and water is included, although not a star meal but that I find normal.

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is a wonderful tourist attraction in Thekkady region.. I went with my family so couldn't explore more than what everyone wanted to see.. But I would recommend you to explore it to the fullest.. Go unplanned for 2-3 days and explore this region.. It has a lot to offer..

There is a boat trip for around an hour or so in the Kumily Lake region.. If you are lucky you will be able to spot many animals.. Elephants, Deers, Monkeys, At times Tigers, Leopard and all are to be seen during this one and a half hour boat ride.. And you can expect to spot around 50-60 types of birds in the lake region..

But the food over here sucks.. So you better plan the trip accordingly.. Eat outside and then go for the ride..
