“Only for Nature lovers”
Reviewed August 12, 2012

as with most of the wildlife sanctuaries in india, periyar also doesnt have much too talk about...been to this place in July 2012...blessed to watch wild elephant at close call...since this time is monsoon time, it was all green & green...However its not something which is to die for...

Pros- One of the best maintained wildlife sanctuary, Maintained by Kerala govt, everthing right from booking, waiting area, Boats are quite neat & clean.

Cons-

1.since i went to in the monsoon , thr was not much crowd...during season i heard that you have to stand at least 3 hours to get the boat ticket, which in my opinion is not worth waiting for.

2. during season, their are many boats which are plying in the periyar river, due to the noise created , u will hardly have a chance to see any wild animals except may be wild boaror sambhar

Periyar is to be visited only by nature lover or nature photographers ......Cheers!!!!

“Nothing special”
Reviewed July 19, 2012

I am a bit conservative in ranking this attraction higher probably because I come from a place where we have equally beautiful forest with same flaura and fauna (minus elephants).

The boat ride in periyar lake was like a run of the mill commercial ride and they showed us various animals from a far distance. It looked like we are in an open air safari zoo with nothing special.

The elephants, for which we went all the way there were visible but they boat stayed away from them quite a distance and hence you could only make out their silhouette ( what a shame). It all ended too quickly. Probably i should have taken the elephant ride into the forest but for the young kids.

Hence for Metro city dwellers its something different but for me who come from the heart of India, I have seen much more. Overall an average experience.

“Pristine forest but over crowded ...”
Reviewed July 5, 2012

The rainforest that composes the pericardial wildlife sanctuary is hauntingly beautiful with its evergreen trees and fresh mountain air. However I think this whole place is way too commercialised and its a sad sight to see so many people inside the park making so much noise ... Makes you realise that for some reason people in India don't know the difference between a national park and a picnic spot.

I was only there for a day and if I had more time would have loved to go for a day trek in the forest rather than the boat ride. There is also a night trek in the forest which sounds great but in the rainy season one tends to run into a lot of leeches which is why we avoided it.

The boat trip is very scenic, but the boats have a LOT of people on them. We were able to spot several deer and bison on the ride ... The animals seem to have gotten used to e relatively noisy boats and tourists coming through their habitat and are generally unperturbed by them.

Go here if you want to truly experience what a rainforest in the subcontinent is like .. Don't go here if you wish to come and "sight animals" that is best done in a zoo, animals are incidental to the forest and more a matter of luck

The entrance fee is not very cheap but I think they should increase it furthe to dissuade the crowds of tourists currently treating this as a picnic place to "spot animals"

“Pristine Nature of Thekkady Bamboo Rafting Whole Day Trip”
Reviewed July 3, 2012

It is a wonderful day long experience consisting of combination of boat rides, jungle treks with escorted forest guards with guns, bamboo rafting interspersed with a very homely breakfast and forest fore cooked lunch. The day started at 8.00 am with adeqaute rain protection gear, and leech protecting socks for each partcipant, and all of us crossing over a lake stretch. Then it was a trining inspiring walk for about 2 hours thorugh forest, glades and grassland. We were lucky to see wild boars at about 50 meters range. We slipped onto bamboo rafts with our foot almost always in water, and crossed many islands. Though no elephants, we saw herds of bisons, at least 25 types of birds, like open billed storks, darters, kingfishers, and even hornbills.

“High hopes quashed!”
Reviewed July 3, 2012

If you only want to view some good picturesque sites, this place would live up to your expectations. But if you actually intend to see wild animals, you couldn't get more disappointed. The locals create a big fuss about getting early to the park to view animals. They make you queue up vehicles at the park gate, waiting for it to open early in the morning. Then they make you run a km for getting early in the ferry queue. All this for seeing a black dot somewhere in the distance, which they term is a bison. The only animals you get to see are wild boars. But again, the lake and the forests are surely a good sight, just keep your expectations limited
