We took the Launch Service to visit the place and all we got to see was deer and pigs. The tickets are tough to get and one has to rach really early to be sure of getting them. For the whole trip it was raining and the Launch had almost no protection excluding tarps!
Waste of a good 2 Hrs Waiting and 2 Hrs on the boat!

After a disappointing boat ride (rupees 45 + 300 for park entrance) whixh I wouldn't advise to anyone if they wish to see wildlife as the boat is very loud and smells like diesel, my partner and I decided to do a 3 day treck offered by the ecocenter in kumily.

Saw lots of animals and was a great experience, the guards really knew their stuff and they cooked us a wonderful meal.

As it was the wet season in the period in which we visited the forest was full of leaches, however these weren't around the camp.

Perhaps the trek is not for everyone as it is quite expensive (8000 rps for two people) and not as confortable as a hotel room, but the amount you get to see and learn well makes up for the trouble!!

Like others we saw bison, monguse, various primates, birds, wild boar, and most importantly elephants!!! no tigers I'm afraid :(

Yup, I noted some of the local women in the line-up were gagging as they waited at the doorway to the open toilets. I had paid 2 rupees and was waiting for the one enclosed toilet with a door.....but most used the open squats while we waited in a line behind them. I think my feet had a urine sprayed on them.

The boat ride was disappointing. We got moved out of the crowded lower deck after whining, and paying a bribe of R200 to the young operator.( We had binoculars and were interested in bird-watching.) We saw a few birds, sambar deer in the distance, and wild boars in the distance. My partner thought he saw elephants through his binoculars, but no one else saw them.....

Poorly run, no instructions. Claustrophobic, crowded lower deck on boat. Weird line-up system. No wonder they had a boat capsize a few years ago. At least we were made to wear life-jackets and not stand up in the boat.

I visited the park in the first week of Jan. We were at the gate at 5AM and there was no information except "agents" who were out there to make a quick buck. The gate opened at 6AM and there was a mad rush to go to the parking area (vehicles were speeding). We got an entry ticket at 5:45AM. The target was to get the early morning boat ride ticket which was availabe at another window inside the park - a 3 km road and a 700m foot trip to get there.

The next 3 km was a vehicle race in the park (bus, taxi, auto etc). Once we reached the vehicle parking area, another 700m to go to reach the boat ticket window - probably the worst part as people were running and hiring speeding opportunistic auto tempos, who were out to make easy money. Once we reached the boat ticket window, saw several agents active. A basic form needed to be filled - pls carry a pen. With a struggle, got the early AM boatride ticket.

Things got better after this mad rush. The boat ride was very nice and the park is simlply beautiful. Calm, clean, very pretty. Saw sambhar deer, wild boar with cubs, elephants with cubs, cormorands, eagles etc.

I wish that there would be better information and tickets would be issued in a more organized fashion to ensure that the experience remains pleasant.

We went to thekkady as a part of our 5 day tour.
One thing to be concidered is, in thekkedy only wild life sanctuary park is the attraction and except that nothing is special there. Here in this sanctuary we have to take a boat ride for 1 hour or 2 hours for seeing various wild life (you can see them only if you are lucky). This boat ride also having very limited seats and one who is having interest in experincing this has to react early. tickets for every ride will be opened 2 hours earlier and as this is the only attraction out there soo much rush will be there for these tickets.
Rides at morning 7:30 am and evening 3:30 pm is having 2 hour duration and remaining all other times is of 1 hour duration only (for the same ticket price). The last ride is at 3:30 pm only.
Presonally i prefer this place is ok for a family but i will not prefer this location for honeymoon couple. Please explore about this location as detail as possible before planning.
