Bamboo cafe enjoys a great rating on trip advisor, so we decided to SPECIALLY walk down to the cafe from our hotel . It was difiicult to locate at first , as the cafe is built way below the road level. The initial appearance was really disappointing and the place is shoddy . We still went ahead to try the food, with a nearly slaughtered hope. The chicken was hopeless. It looked as if we were being fed the chicken bones, after skimming off the meat . The vegetarian food that we ordered was even worse. The wait time for these couple of dishes was 40 minutes. Still wondering why had he proudly displayed "reviewed on tripadvisor" standee at the cash counter!!!

Arrived in kumily staying at periyar villa home stay for 3 nights (fantastic). Went for a meal here with our 11 year old daughter. Service started well.. Asked if we wanted a beer said yes if cold. Arrived 20 mins later after being put in a freezer, still tepid though. Ordered Fish tikka which was ordinary and not freshest fish, yellow dal which was worst we have had in india and very bland. Ordered macaroni with chicken for my daughter which was inedible. Nan bread was OK but no choice of roti or chappati. Complained but no explanation or apology. Next day my wife and I felt sick. We have enjoyed excellent Kerala cuisine in many places, but this isn't one of them. If you want tandoori chicken and warm beer go here... And not cheap cost us 1400 rupees including warm beer.

We saw a group of people leaving the night before, saying what a good meal they had, so we thought we would give it a try. It has an appealing rustic ambience, a bamboo hut with white tablecloths and pretty lights. We passed a tandoor on the way in where kebabs were being prepared, and my chicken tikka was delicious. The veg curries were also good, and the nan. All in all a good experience, slightly more expensive than some of the restaurants around, but worth it for the food, setting and cheery service.

By the looks of it, this restaurant lacks everything in terms of looks or ambiance. However, let that not stop you from eating here. As the reviews tell, besides food being good, this place serves awesome tandoori items. Naans (butter and garlic) were soft. Gravy dishes were spicy but we loved it (we eat lots of spice). Ordered macaroni for kids and that was a let down. Overall, nice experience.
