“Pricy for budget hotel”
Reviewed December 27, 2013

This is fine for a one night stay, especially if you're up early for the boating trip or treks around the Tiger Reserve. Our room was mostly clean - save a dozen dead flies (huge ones) around the room and many in the bathroom as well.

Dinner is not included and costs Rs 350 (which they don't tell you about), and the meal on the night we stayed was pretty disgusting, to say the least. Staff is very courteous and helpful in booking tours.

I'd personally skip this join and stay in one of the private cabins or outside the reserve.

Room Tip: Don't stay here!

The hotel is an excellent budget hotel . Located in the the forest area, the hotel offers a unique experiance of staying amidst the wilderness. The Periyar lake is also in close proximity to the hotel.

the hotel premises were neat and clean...
The hotel is situated within the santuary which in itself can be a big drawback.
as we were there for 2 days and u are locked inside after 6 pm.

it is perfect for people coming in the evening and leaving next day.
but for people who are here for longer time ,it is not worth it.

reasons:
1. there are many beautiful hotels and resort outside the santuary gate.
options to suit every pocket is there ( homestay , budget hotels , lavish hotels , magnifient resorts etc)
2.u will miss kathakali,Kalaripayattu ( martial arts form, sorry i dint spell it right) evening shows.
3.Market outside the santuary has many small shops selling local products ( spices, sandal products , kerala handicrafts etc).
U will miss evening shopping experience if u are staying in periyar house.
4. If u intend to explore hangout places near thekkady, in any case u have to be back before 6 pm.

Even the rooms are very small.

Although they are good and tidy but not worth the tariff they charge.
plus there was no ventilation in the toilets.

Every time u use it and leave the door open , u will need a room freshner ...

We have stayed for one night in Dec 2013. It was far more than our expectation. Nice, clean and tidy rooms with all the facilities, excellent staff managing the hotel, good restaurant and facilitation to see the forest area and boat ride through Periyar Lake.
Boat ride of 1.5 hours is very good attractions. We took early morning boat ride to possibly see some wild life in the jungle while on boat. Boat covers long area in the lake with jungle on either side, but we were not fortunate to see wild animals. We could see birds and monkeys(lot more). However c=scenic beauty was nice. Surrise, sunshine on water, fog and forest trees, forest area gave the pleasing experience during boat ride.
Food was very good.
Stay in the hotel was pleasing experience.
One day is not enough. Two days can help in taking up guided hiking trop through the forest area. Next time we will plan for it.

We stayed at Periyar House for 2 nights and had a very good experience. We booked Avenue rooms, which although had old fittings was clean and well maintained. The hotel allows enjoying the tranquility of the forest within a budget. The staff was super friendly, polite and helpful. The room tariff includes breakfast and dinner, which were good. We could renew our park entrances (required for the walks) and book boat rides through the hotel without any hassle. Besides monkey, we even saw a monitor lizard and a family of wild boars in the backyard. The main attraction is definitely the position of the hotel and we were impressed by the politeness of the staff. We did get the value for our money.

Periyar house, a budget hotel in the middle of the forest , so don,t expect luxury beds , white bed sheets without strains and some new towels. All the fittings in the room are pretty old. we have booked 6 deluxe rooms , but the rooms are neat and clean with gysors in the bathrooms. Hotel is not on the banks of river as I thought.
For boat ride u need to walk for 15 mins . If you book the rooms in this hotel then you can book the boat tickets in advance. It comes with dinner and breakfast and food is below average , also pls remember after 6pm you cannot leave hotel premisses so you will not be able to see the night programmes in the town. We didn't see any animals in the hotel premisses except monkeys in the morning.

Overall verdict : frankly speaking deluxe rooms are not the value for money and food is below average . But one advantage is you can book boat tickets in advance.

A excellent place to stay at. Very calm & peaceful. one should stay for at least two nights. Only be aware of the monkeys they are very witty. Food served at this place is excellent & there are lot of varieties. Support staff is very helpful.
