Apart from few birds and mokeys, did not see any other animals. Great sceanery. 3 kilometers from Thekkady, but because of lot of vistors, you have to be there 2 hours before the departure time.

“Lots of Elephants”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 22, 2013

Went to Periyar from The Elephant Court Hotel - booted up and had to wear sock things in case of leeches but this was really only applicable to the west season. The fun part was crossing the river on a wee raft - only 5 at a time - felt we were getting right into the spirit of things. Our trek was about 4 miles into the Reserve - we passed a few local tribespeople who were friendly, saw lots of birds, tiger poo, porcupine poo and then a bonus - we heard fantastically loud trumpeting and our guides had to tell us to keep very quiet. We then saw a herd of elephants about 200 metres away. got lots of photos. Definitely worth a visit. It might be interesting going on a boat trip but I was glad we decided to take a jungle trek instead.

“No Tigers”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 22, 2013

Very little to see apart form 2 elephants, water buffalo and wild boar. The scenery is good and the mist rising from the river makes photography atmospheric.Pity that you have to stay in the dredful hotel to get priority booking on the boats,

“Stalking wild beasts”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 21, 2013

The guides were very nice and shared interesting information. I liked the fact that one guide was carrying a rifle -- it made me feel as if there might be some danger. But all in all, the walking tour did not seem that remote or adventuresome. My friends who walked ahead saw wild elephants...that would have enhanced my experience. It seemed more like a well-traveled trail than a nature or wilderness experience. My favorite part was the ride on the bamboo rafts...there we sailed right by a great number of bird species. What a way to bird watch! I saw the cover girl of the South India Bird Book: the Malabar Trogon!

“ignore adveice and go in the afternoon”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 17, 2013

all the books say that the best chance of seeing wildlife is first think in the morning and last thing at night but we went at 1.15 and saw a lot of animals. Met other travelers who said that they had taken so me of the other trips and treks and seen very little
