Well, there just aren't enough wonderful adjectives to give a review of this hotel to do it justice. First of all, the hostess, Pirkko, is a jewel. Very friendly and accommodating. The pool villa is stunning and a private pool is an experience not to be missed. This hotel was included in our luxury tour of southern India and was by far the most luxurious of our six hotels. The chef prepared meals that were so flavorful that we ate a lot more than we meant to! The ambience at the plantation house is very relaxing and a welcome respite. The fact that they do not serve alcohol was not an issue as we were able to use the wine we brought with us. Definitely worth every penny. Thank you, Pirkko, for a wonderful experience.

Room Tip: If you can afford it, be sure to book a pool villa.

This is a very special place completely away from it all and feels like you do not have a worry in the world. Pirkko (our host) was so accommodating and made sure we had everything we needed from the moment we arrived. From offering us snacks whenever we needed to waking up at 4.30 to make sure we got our jeep for safari.

The location is away from it all in a plantation and so peaceful. It is a working plantation which is really interesting. We had a driver who also had accommodation. There is plenty to see/do in the area - from safari to tea plantations.

The rooms were really clean and large with a private outside area. They feel special and snacks are provided each day as well. We had the pool room which was very modern but over a bridge which gives that extra bit of privacy.

Food is great and the flavours amazing. There were a large number of dishes each night and we discovered some tasty Indian desserts as well - a true taste of Kerala here. Taking your own alcohol is absolutely fine and some of the Indian wine was really good. We also had a cookery demo and there is a book of all the recipes so still enjoying Keralan curry! Breakfast choices are both Keralan and there is Pirkko's homemade bread too with local jams which was really nice after 2 weeks of Keralan breakfast.

Overall this is a great base to explore the Kumily area and we felt truly relaxed when we left.

Room Tip: We enjoyed being in a pool villa - even though the pool was cool and rooms are away from the main bu...

My daughter and I had a wonderful stay at Annavilasam. The accomodation was of an excellent standard as was the food and the attentiveness of the staff. We had our driver bring in our tipple to enhance our evening meals and we had european lunches since we had been eating Indian for several days. The area is well worth a visit and this is definitely the place to stay.

Room Tip: Have a pool to yourself

First of all i would like to thank the Manager Mrs. Pirkko (i am sorry, but i don't exactly remember the name) who is from Finland and a very charming and played a perfect hostess throughout our stay @ aanavilasam. She gave us a good review about kerala and things to do there.. Although i did stay there for one night.. but it was magical.. everything about this place is amazing.. rooms, decors, the people, scenery, amenities, everything..
I had booked one of the private pool villa, as it was our honeymoon and wanted it to be special.. The villa is big with all the exclusive amenities, it has an open shower, a fantastic view.. Since it was winter i could not enjoy the pool but it's worth every penny.. The food was fantastic. We had arrived during the afternoon & were served a super cool welcome drink.. Later in the evening ,we had a four course dinner.. and every course was more tasty than the previous one.. ;) They even baked us a special cake for our honeymoon... and it was indeed very kind of them.. Since we had missed out on Periyar, we had to leave early morning. the manager Mrs. Pirkko, herself gave us the wake up call which was kind enough of her. She even packed us our portable breakfast..
The only thing which i would suggest here is to have a bigger board for their property as the hoarding is a bit small for such a lovely resort and expand their property.. would love to have a bigger crowd there .. more people more fun !!!

None the less would definitely visit again & spend more time.. with the manager.. (Mrs P. you are wonderful)

Room Tip: Private pool villa.. book it early as it tends to be full..

From arranging our transfer from Kochi, to fixing up day trips, serving great meals for breakfast and dinner (and lunch if needed) the 4 days we had here was faultless. Pirrko and her team make for great hosts and nothing was too much trouble. The alcohol (or lack of) is only a licensing issue and taking your own is no problem.
We stayed in the garden suite which was a great room, walk in shower, luxurious feel etc. The generator is a bit noisy but we'd come to expect that wherever we were given the electricity supply can be tempermental at best in India.
If lucky enough to return to Periyar one day, Aanavilasam would be top of the list.

My wife and I spent a few nights in the pool suite with the tree in the bathroom...it was worth every penny. the service a d food
was the best we had during our 8 nights in Kerala. The chef is a talented young man... he went out of his way and made us a special continental diner one night to give us a break from Indian cuisine...on our request.

The plantation manager gave us a private tour of the plantation which we really enjoyed. We loved the bathroom...the bed was great --- not hard as mention in a previous review. It was nice to find luxury after your very basic Kerala home stay experince (we tried a few of the top rated authentic home stays and found that TA contributors were not objective as they are giving out 5 star reviews ratings because the owners were nice people but forgot to mention the 2 - 3 star accommodations).

Situated in the hills about 10 km outside of Periyar/ Thekkady in a plantation this is a very quiet and superb accommodation which is what you would expect from a Trip Advisor 2011/12 winner. Free WIFI is available in the main house lounge area. We had an outside cottage with its own pool which was a little on the cool side. The room has a large comfortable bed, and comfortable seating the kitchen area has tea making facilities and a good assortment of nibbles. The bathroom is large with an outside shower and plenty of hot water. The room is fitted with Indian round 3 pin plugs but which also take a European 2 pin adapter or cable. No alcohol is served with the meals but it is acceptable to bring your own. The food is excellent and caters easily for vegetarians, the Chef has written his own book which is published by the owner who is a well known Indian photographer and publisher, All of the books are available at a very reasonable price. The Manager Pirkko is Finnish and a very charming and fun hostess. Our thanks to Benny and Musafir tours for recommending this accommodation it is a very relaxing haven from the nearby town. Being in the hills it is generally cooler so aircon is not necessary.
Not to be missed in the village is the evening Marshall arts show and the Kerala Mudra Kathakali facial play which is magical particularly if you can book early and get the sears near the front. For the Marshall arts all seats have a good view. Each show costs about 200Rupees /person.

Periyar Tiger Reserve
Entry for Europeans is 300 Rupees plus 100 in tax. The reserve is located at the end of the village and is very busy. We did the 3-hour trek and could only get on the 10.a.m walk, as we were told that the birds come down from the canopy at this time as it gets hotter. We did have sightings but these were through the canopy i.e. at range and not fully clear (even with binoculars). You are advised to wear the provided gaters even when it is dry (protection against leeches, we didn’t see any but better to be safe). We did the 3.30p.m cruise; which is busy as it is prime time, cruise approx 500 rupees/person. Here we saw wild elephants, bison, deer, boar and a variety of birds including 2 types of eagles and osprey so well worth doing. Monkeys at the entrance can be a nuisance, do not feed.

Room Tip: All are good, just enjoy the tranquillity
