“Wonderful stay”

The Aanavilasam Luxury Plantation House is an amazing place.
First when Mrs Pirkko welcomed us she told us that we were upgraded to a pool villa and we were delighted.
The room was very clean and spacious, the bathroom was great with a tree in the middle of the shower with a great view on the plantations.
The pool was very relaxing and the overall atmosphere very luxurious.
We even adapted our plans to spend more time in the room.
The service is great: Mrs Pirkko and her team are very nice and take care of you in the best way.
We had the pleasure to be invited for a cooking lesson with their Chef and it was a great experience.
We tool all our meals there as the food was delicious.
We can only recommend this hotel which was the best one we experienced during our trip in Kerala.
Thank you Mrs Pirkko and team.

Aanavilasam Luxury Plantation House - is absolutely, relaxation, luxurious, heavenly, romantic and great value for money!

Mrs Pirkko, a tremendous host, once you have been here you will know why this place works so well. The services levels are second to none. The place is secluded which we thought ideal, you can't even see let alone hear your nearest neighbor.

Mrs Pirkko & Team were an absolute pleasure; they know exactly what guest service is and always go that extra mile for the guests and with willingness and a smile. I really do not know where they get their energy from. Mrs Pirkko think of everything from providing you with information on plantation, tour programs, pre-booked tickets for many cultural shows and tourism activities are available with her, no need to rush-up in queue for any such shows happening in Thekkady. Tickets were issued at no extra cost and no deposit, absolute trust is given to their guests.

The pool villa is amazing, spacious and luxurious. Loads of architectural thoughts and details are given in designing. The infinity pool in pool villa is a fantastic way to cool off; the uninterrupted views of the forest and sky are to die for. The bathroom-mood lighting and open shower with hot water in cold climate, large window open to forest is amazingly natural.

The food was absolutely fantastic, Chef Krishna was a great guy, not only a fantastic chef but also very professional and friendly. We enjoyed the experience so much that we booked him for a cooking class to teach Kerala dishes. We had paneer, mushroom and fish which were absolutely excellent.

Driving to this place is very easy; it takes 20minutes from Kumily Bus stand. Just follow the google map.

We can't recommend enough for travelers with kids. It is totally ideal for couples who want a romantic getaway and for busy people to isolate from hectic life-style.

We will treasure our fond memories of staying in this beautiful place with the loveliest hosts, and are already factoring a return visit into our next trip.

This lovely house inside a plantation is run like a B&B by a very nice and warm
hostness. We booked the pool villa and it was worth every bit of the steep price we
paid for it. The 2 pool villas are separated from the main house by a rickety (not unsafe)
bamboo bridge and has a large spacious bedroom with a nice bed and fresh and soft linen, a well stokced pantry, a huge bathroom with an outdoor shower (a tree springs right through the bathroom), and the highlight- the private inifnity pool set against the backdrop of the mountain and forests. Its a treat to the eyes to simple sit there or one can have their senses invigorated by taking a dip in the chilly water to be followed by a hot shower. The bathroom is well stocked as well but all toiletries and a hair dryer. The clsoet and luggage space is plenty with a nice
bureau with a mirror as well as a work desk and chair in the room.
You can be taken on a walk around the plantation should you choose to and its rather nice and green- lush and lovely in the monsoons.
The main house has a charming fireplace around large leather sofas around a well stocked bookcase. you can borrow from these as well.
The area also has free wi fi (the only place in Kerala where we found wifi to be free).
THe dining area faces the open forest and every night the table is beautifully set with impressive crockery and candle light and home style food. You can take your own sweet time and it was an absolute
joy to have the place all to ourselves. My one recommendation would be to expand the menu or give the customers a choice (menu is set) espcecially for the domestic visitors as
they perhaps eat a somewhat similar cuisine at home and may desire a variety but I got the feeling the aim of the place was not to market it to domestic visitors- thats a shame as I know many who would enjoy it.
The location of the place is lovely too, set high up in the hill away from the congested main town area but only a short drive to the Periyar Tiger Reserve and Lake.
Pirkko, the nice hostness, is a smiling presence who only adds to the warmth of the place- she accompanied us for dinner one night and it was lovely talking to her about the guests she receives from all over the world.
The house has only a common TV which is a nice arrangement as its not a total disconnect but the rooms are free from the invasion.
This isnt a cheap place but its worth every penny- you wont regret staying here if you are looking to relax and unwind amongst the greenery of Kerala.

Room Tip: Pool villa is very much worth the higher price from the normal suite room

We had gne there with a common friend for lunch. The property took my breath away. The concept is amazing and give various start hotels a run for their money as far as rooms are concerned. The food was excellent..very fresh, very traditional.

Room Tip: The pool villas are excellent.

We drove to Annavilasam from Kovalam and it was one of the most beautiful drives ever. The roads were empty as there was a state wide "bandh" and hence an otherwise long journey was made in good time. We had booked the pool villa since it was highly recommended on trip advisor and were not disappointed! So beautiful and charming! The experience of staying in a room with a private pool overlooking acres of plantations and hills was amazing though it was chilly so we couldn't actually get in the pool! Pirrko and the rest of the staff were extremely hospitable and helpful! Had a great stay!!

Aanavilasam is an odd mixture of excellence and irritating problems.

It's a beautiful place, set in a cardamom plantation. The interior design is very attractive with really special details such as the tree growing through the open shower, hammock in the trees, room water and homemade breakfast preserves in environmentally friendly glass or ceramic containers, coffee grown on the plantation...

Pirrko is indeed a charming host, greeting guests personally and tailoring activities to suit including a fascinating tour of the plantation provided by the estate manager. We enjoyed the communal dining arrangements and met some lovely people at each meal. It seemed that the employees were really treated like colleagues and it was the place where our driver seemed best cared for - he suffered a sad family event during our stay and Pirrko helped arrange for a relief driver to collect us so he could go home. Can't imagine the manager of the Taj doing that!

However there were a few frustrations. Incredibly complex light switch arrangements are endemic in Keralan hotels but Aanavilasam outdid them all. Pirrko was unable to provide an iron or ironing board and laundry had to be sent to the village and took a couple of days to come back - it was the most expensive laundry of our stay due to transportation costs. There is no clear service tariff and little extras offered can add up considerably. It's a pretty long drive from Thekkady.

Yet more important for us was an unagreed change made to our accommodation, which caused a fair bit of inconvenience. I was travelling with my venerable father and he had specifically booked the two suites in the main house in order that I could be close to him as he sometimes needs some help.

When we arrived, Pirrko "offered" for one of us to be "upgraded" to a pool villa. This actually suited us less well, so we said "no" - but it emerged that we had no choice in the matter as other guests were already installed in one of the suites we had booked.

The Pool Villas are probably lovely for a honeymooning couple but I was actually quite afraid alone up there on the first night, not certain how secure the open-to-sky bathroom was (later I found out that the noise that sounded like a man grunting outside was actually automatic air freshener above the loo) the water in the pool was too cold to be pleasant and the charming little swing bridge began to lose its charm after the umpteenth crossing on errands between my villa and Dad's down in the main house. So really it was not suitable for us and we did feel that our original request, made many months previously, should have been honoured.

So overall a mixed experience. If I were fortunate enough to visit Thekkady again I would probably chose somewhere a little simpler and closer to the Park.
