“A Royal Treat!”
Reviewed September 25, 2013

We were two couples travelling to Kerala for the first time. It was our dream to visit Kerala as many of our friends in Gujarat had shared very good memories with us. Our stay at Mayapott was one of it's kind. We stayed in the cardamom studio rooms adjacent to each other. The resort was very different from other places we stayed in Kerala. It had a rivulet gushing down right beneath our rooms. There were natural stones inside the room and the bathroom had natural river pebbles under the shower and ferns growing closeby. It was a quite romantic experience staying there. Although we had lot of apprehensions about the food as we were Jains , the staff had made some excellent and tasty food for us that included some Kerala dishes and sweets. The kitchen incharge, Charles also invited us to experiment some ethnic pickles and sweets. Philip took us for a plantation visit in the morning and he us around the place. He also told about the beekeeping in the estate and also gave us some natural honey to taste. The highlight of our trip was a visit to their fruit farm in a jeep which was around 50 minutes drive from the resort. We plucked grapes, tasted different fruits and had a ride in a horsecart within the farm . The surprise was they have arranged a grape crushing event for us. It was really romantc and we had lot of fun. We have seen this only in the movies. It is a must visit place for young couples.

Q arrived at Mayapott vRilla from Munnar, it took us about 2 hours and 30 minutes. Drive itself was very rewarding as you pass from greenery to greenery. We were welcomed with great warmth, steamed towels and a hot ginger brew made us feel recharged and ready for a hike.
With in no time we were escorted to the rooms. Wow ! Marvelous the rooms with large windows over looking the gurgling stream below and green canopy of large trees around. Your are in the midst of a j . The kids climbed on the natural boulders in the rooms. And with in few minutes we were invited for a tea and plantation walk before it gets dark.
The guided plantation trails walk and the cardamom curing center visit inside the estatejj is worth, as you trails beneath the canopy of green shades with very informative words John our host. There were lots of birds that we could spot!
Food served during dinner was prepared with lot of love as you could feel the freshness of vegetables, fish and we were requested to taste a very varieties of pickles by the young chef Charles. He is an ever smiley young chap, a very good dinner time company. He loved what he is doing with passion! Thats it!
Our family experience at Mayapott was a more than our expectation, it had all clean and hygienic comforts of a boutique hotel, the unparalleled privacy of a country home, and above all warm and friendly staff to take care of your smallest needs.
Mayapott is worth during a holiday menu in India!

Maya Pot was in the countryside approx 15k from Thekkady and a good location for those not wanting to be right in the middle of the bustle of what is quite a touristy town.

The house is built from stone and has clearly been designed for a family for their own use originally, with good quality finish, with big fireplaces to heat the house when it's cooler, not that we needed it given how hot it was when we were there in March.

We were greeted with a cold drink on the bridge which joins the property which spans both sides of the stream or river, which caught the breeze and it was a great spot to watch the grey hornbills during the day and bats at night.

The rooms were very well presented, more boutique hotel style, with a nice bathroom and a real eye for presentation - we were fascinated by the towels and face cloths which were arranged each day via some kind of origami and the addition of flower petals into peacocks, hearts, birds etc.

John was hugely helpful and welcoming and we had a tour of the Cardamon plantation it sits in which was fascinating and I only wish we'd had a bit longer for it.

We'd not made any safari plans so he talked us through the various options and booked us a jeep safari and accompanied us for the first part to ensure that everything ran smoothly. The safari involves an early morning start so we were there at sunrise outside the park. John purchased hot tea while we waited as it was quite chilly, so take a fleece if you do it. I was quite sceptical about what we might see from a jeep but actually, given we were in the dry season the wildlife was great because the road is close to the water. We saw a herd of wild elephant within a few feet of the road, in fact at one point the herd was crossing the road which precipitated a bit of a dash for the jeep. There were lots of other birds and animals as well and the guides were fantastic, spotting things we would certainly have missed had we been on our own.

We kept the driver for the afternoon and then had lunch at the hotel at the Thekkady wildlife reserve and did the boat trip (beware the wildlife dept boat broke down and apparently this is not unusual, but the delay did us a favour as it was later when we left and we saw elephant, bison, wild boar, sambar deer when it did run.

The chef at the Maya Pot was relatively young but had worked in a variety of top class restaurants and was not only able to cook Indian food but also other styles such as Chinese, Thai etc. The dining room is positioned on one side of the bridge over the waterfall with windows each side allowing a great view. The only shame is that because it was the dry season there wasn't water running under the bridge but I imagine it must be spectacular when it does flow. When we were there we were the only people staying and we felt thoroughly spoilt being waited on by John who was great to talk to about local life in India.

When we left John led us to the main road on his moped and ensured we headed off in the right direction, called us part way to ensure we were still heading the right way and checked with our next host to ensure we had arrived safely. Nothing was too much trouble and we felt incredibly well looked after throughout our stay and we'd definitely go back if we had the chance.

Namaste!

Thank you very much for the review with lot of insights into your experience, one could feel your experience in your own words, especially of the stream, BBQ dinner etc. Allow us the liberty to make a small correction for the readers sake; you had mentioned that Mayapott is surrounded by tea gardens, it is cardamom plantation instead, it could be a factual error as you might have visited Munnar as well during your trip.

Thank you very much again and looking forward to see you again,
Cheers!

We stayed two nights and enjoyed all of it. It's a very relaxing place, clean, and very quiet except for the jungle sounds which are fun. The staff are another highlight. John is helpful and friendly and gives an informative plantation walk if you choose. Baby is a great housekeeper and delighted us with his "towel art". Charles is a superb cook. Every meal was done very well - be sure to try his biryani. Water pressure was low, and a few of the lights were not operating. But those are minor quibbles. I would love to return and hope to stay longer next time - it's very relaxing.
