The hotel is not a 5 star as one would expect from the Taj, but the service definitely was. The staff was attentive to our needs which made our stay a very pleasant one.

MANAGER SAYS ITS NOT A 5-STAR: The manager of this normally classified 5-star claimed its not. That's surprising since it means that Taj doesn't care about its 5-star rating (all over India). It also means that management doesn't care about keeping up service standards. Its like the manager at the Ritz saying that it's not a 5-star... kind of hard to understand.

BATHROOMS DIRTY: The bathrooms are filthy. The rooms have droppings in them too.

SHEETS DIRTY: With all that money we are paying, they could launder the sheets! Instead they hide behind this "eco-friendly" label claiming concern for the environment which doesn't appear to be true by any discerning person.

FOOD/DINING AWFUL: This place had the worst food of any hotel we have stayed at in India. I think they tried to get cheap and didn't even bother to hire a chef. Once they found out our thoughts, the chef came by to try to make the food better and it went from awful to mediocre.

One of the waiters, Alex, was quite helpful and a friendly chap. But otherwise, the hotel left a lot to be desired.

Beautiful rooms, lovely solitude. The cottages here are really nice, huge in size, wonderful clean bathrooms as well. Though the gardens at this place are not as well maintained as at Spice Village, this is an ideal place to stay (Spice village has no TV and Thekkady can get a bit lonely if you are not in a gorup). The staff was friendly and took really good care for us.

The food here is also nice. We had a package deal at the resort which incl. b'fast. We had visited in the off season and there was no buffet breakfast, so at breakfast we could order all and everything we wanted and we would get it.

Only complaint is the pool. The water looked hazy and hence we decided to give it a miss. Otherwise it was a marvelous experience.

We stayed 3 nights at the Taj Garden Retreat in Thekkady (Kumily) in March 06. The individual cottages were very nicely furnished and luxurious. The pool was a fairly decent size, and not at all busy. One day I saw monkeys swinging in the tree above the pool. The well kept plants attracted some lovely butterflies. The food in the restaurant was fantastic if pricey. Atmosphere in the restaurant not great though - a bit brightly lit and empty. The only thing that I thought was poor was the price charged for the day trips. You might want to shop around. We had a wonderful spice garden and view point tour from the man that owns the Pepper Garden Coffee House and it packed in much more than the equivalent taj tour for less money.

I had the chance to stay at Taj Garden last january 27th for only one night. Great people at the reception, very nice and helpfull the manager who took care of re charging all my stuff (camera, video, laptop, telephone... ) The setting is wondeful, rooms are big (we were 3 girls sleeping in one room) and bathroom very comfortable with a nice bathtube. We were booked on HB, but than decided to dine at the grill restaurant. We had to pay a little extra, but not very expensive compared to all what we ate. It was the beginning of our fam trip in Kerala (I'm a travel agent) and found the food to be really great. Same for breakfast, with a wide choise of indian and western food, probably much more than we are used to eat. The next day, as we had to go for Elephant-ride they were so kind to let us have our room later than expected. The location is wonderful, the pool is also very nice even if we had no time to spend there; the garden is a splendour; probably needs more information for bungalows' setting as we lost our way when going to bed very late. I'm sure it might be a perfect place to relax for a week or more, this will be probably in our next trip to Kerala.
Wish to thank all the staff for being so helpful and attentive.
