Sumilayam Jungle View Homestay
Ranked #36 of 133 Thekkady B&B and Inns
Reviewed April 25, 2013

I'll be honest - I chose Sumilayam Jungle View Homestay going by the large number of good reviews and of course the price. However I was a tad bit disappointed upon reaching here.

For starters, I was expecting a proper 'jungle view'. But apart from the fact that Sumilayam Jungle View Homestay is the last house on the road leading to the jungle, there is not really any connection with the name. The view can be hardly be called so, as everything is hidden by tall trees. Yes you hear a lot of animal noises throughout the day, spot many monkeys and birds, but I was expecting a more expansive view.

We had the top floor room which was large, very clean but basic otherwise. Since the top floor has just one room, we had a whole wrap around balcony with table, chair, a lounder and even a hammock! The owner was really helpful with advice on what to do and hooked us upto the best auto driver in town (Vinod). This was surely a highlight of our stay because Vinod knows everything about Thekkady. He was extremely helpful in showing us around, suggesting options, taking us to Elephant Junction et al.

The best thing about Sumilayam Jungle View Homestay is food. We had the most amazing home-cooked Kerala food here and quantity was more than sufficient. Although be warned that you'll have to indicate to the owner well in advance if you intend to have lunch/dinner.

A note on the location - the house is located at the end of a long winding road near the SBI branch/bus stand. It was especially long and a bit scary to walk from the main market after dark. Also, do carry lot of mosquito repellant and torch. There are frequent power cuts.

We chose this homestay after reading reviews on Tripadvisor and we were not disappointed. We chose the most expensive room which was essentially the whole top floor with a wrap around terrace as it was said to be the best for wildlife watching. It certainly lived up to the hype and we had monkeys, including a rather a rare appearance of a black nilgiri, hornbills and numerous other birds in the trees that surrounded us. Our hosts were friendly, helpful and caring but not intrusive and for anyone concerned that homestay may be a little too 'intimate' an experience fear not as the rooms are more like attached apartments than rooms in the owners house. We had Keralan breakfast twice while staying and found the food to be delicious. When we were visiting there were planned power cuts each evening which did make walking home after an evening meal a little tricky when we forgot the headtorch but there was an emergency light in the room that more than sufficed and the owner came straight out when he heard the gate to show us up to the room if we needed it.

Room Tip: The top floor room is great if it is available and it does feel like you are in the forest with the...

We Stayed in the mid of March for three Nights and really enjoyed each of it. The owner is a very helpful Person who organised eco Bamboo Rafting, spice and Tea Plantage visits, rikshas and Cabs to our next City. His wife cooks awesome Food and the breakfast is Fine as well. The accomodation is located Directly to the Jungle in a back Street so that there is nearly no Traffic voice. The rooms are more than clean and we enjoyed the breakfast in our own rooftop.

All in all a Great experience

We stayed in the large new room at the top for three nights. Our host was very friendly, however there was no room service and it was cold at night. We had to ask for a candle when we had a power cut. With no back up lights moving around the homestay could be dangerous during the regular power cuts at night.

Jungle View is actually a jungle view and environment...The activities of the forest: birds singing, monkeys calling, and the calm sounds of the neighborhood can drift your being into India. Because the weather is pleasant and people very helpful I have stayed 2 months at Jungle View. 5 star homestay from an intrepid traveler.

Room Tip: top floor , front rooms more light.

We had the great pleasure of staying with Rama in early December 2012. On arrival we decided to take the top floor room, which had just been finished, as it was slightly larger than the other rooms and the terrace had greater privacy. It was a great stay which we will remember for a long time. Aside from the hospitality, the highlights were the sights and sounds from the jungle - fruit bats, very un-shy monkeys, giant squirrels and just the noises throughout the day and night. The homestay is very good value for money.

The only drawback was that Kumily is not the best town for evening entertainment and the restaurants in town lacked a little atmosphere. Aside from that though we had a great time.

The location is wonderful, clean rooms, hot water and a spacious balcony with jungle view. We were there with 6 people between 47 and 72 years old, not usually in a homestay. But we all were satisfied. The best was the owner Rama. He organised everything for us, from breakfast to tickets, instructed our driver and was our guide at a walking trip.
So our stay was a very good experience.

Room Tip: The best rooms are on the first floor. Ground floor rooms have got only hot water for the bucket, th...
